guest post from Wooga

Social Media Week is back and there are only a couple more days left until the international conference will open its doors in Berlinon Monday. Germany’s largest free web conference expects to welcome around 8,000 visitors and Wooga is really happy to be part of this ambitious project.

Themed “Empowering Change through Collaboration”, the conference will offer more than 140 events from 24 – 28 September 2012. Open for everyone, Social Media Week seeks to gather people who are interested in discussing the worldwide social, cultural, and economic impact of social media.

Attendees in Berlin can look forward to an interesting panel discussion, an inspiring presentation, and a thrilling gameplay experience from Wooga.

First off on 24 September, Fabian will drop some purple knowledge bombs on the panel, “Like, Share, Comment – The Impact of Social Media for Entertainment Brands”, at Fluxbau (24 September, 7.30-8.30 pm @Radio Flux HQ).

This will be followed by Wooga’s presentation Tag Team, Stephanie and Timo, who will elaborate on “Metrics Do Not Substitute A Good Design: On Magic Numbers and Endless Love” (27 September, 1.15-1.45pm @Naherholung Sternchen). Drawing from their learnings across all Wooga games, Stephanie and Timo will show that certain magic numbers have a dramatic impact on their games – and that you shouldn’t bother to ‘measure everything’. Be prepared for lots of visuals and a fun experience.

Alongside Stephanie’s and Timo’s presentation, visitors at Naherholung Sternchen will have the one-time opportunity to test their gaming skills in an epic arcade battle featuring two of Wooga’s most beloved characters. Built by a very talented group of engineers in their spare time, ‘Wooga Fighter’ reminisces about old classics and will be available during 27 September.

Those who dare to test their old school arcade skills, can take a picture of themselves playing and tweet it (Hashtag: #woofighters). And who knows, maybe you will end up winning one of our über-cool and very contested Wooga Monster shirts.

Bring It On!

Today we are thrilled to announce the (nearly) final locations for the next edition of Social Media Week (SMW) this September 19-23, 2011 and, most importantly, details on how you or your company can Get Involved in the event. The initial lineup of seven confirmed locations announced in April included returning cities Berlin, Milan, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, and São Paulo, plus new entrants from Rio de Janeiro and Moscow. Today we are adding four additional cities, beginning with returning city Los Angeles, and new cities Vancouver, Beirut, and Glasgow.

With these additions, SMW September 2011 will take part in eleven cities across four continents, offering a great diversity in both geographic and cultural locations.

Social Media Week Timetable

Following on from today’s announcement, here’s an overview of some important dates and milestones between now and the September conference:

May 11: Get Involved Announcement – “Get Involved” in SMW September 2011 (sponsors, media partners, speakers, event hosts, venue providers, etc.)

June 1: Event Submission – Local Event Proposal Submission Opens (submit an event idea, or theme or topic that you would like to see covered)

July 6: City Agendas Announced – Initial Programs in Each City To Be Shared (early look at the agenda’s and program outline in each city)

Note: These dates and milestones are subject to change. We will provide more detail in the coming weeks/months.

Over the next two and a half months each of our Social Media Week cities will begin activating their communities and kicking off the ideation process around the events, themes and topics that they want to cover during the week.

In the past, our partners around the world have brought incredible creativity to their events and helped to shape programs that are both diverse from a content standpoint and also exciting from an experiential perspective. Some of the most exciting and fulfilling of these collaborations include: SMW Rome kicking off with a commandeered train ride and event from Milan to Rome train sponsored by Ferrovie della Stato (the Italian Railways); the Ogilvy-hosted Ideas Pop-up Shop at SMW London; the virtual/global Nokia Connects web application; the SMW New York Business, Media & Communications Hub at JWT; Bonin Bough of PepsiCo’s three city SMW tour of London, Sao Paulo, and New York; and SMW Bogota’s Open Day at the Casa de Editorial at El Tiempo.

Social Media Week Berlin 2011 starts on September 19 – one day after the city-state holds an election to choose its political leaders for the next five years.
The Berlin election will be a great diving board to launch into SMW. What role will social media play in the election? And more generally, what can social media do for the city?
How can we use our networks of interaction and communication to make Berlin a more dynamic, exciting, democratic, inclusive, interactive, creative and productive place?
These kinds of discussions and more will take place during the five days of SMW. But the exact shape and content of the week will also depend on what the audience wants to do, say, and hear. SMW Berlin will be driven largely by input from social media users.

So what do you want to talk about? Which speakers would you like to see in Berlin? What kind of events would you like to participate in? We want to hear from you!
