Welcome to Social Media Week! As we kick off, want to know what’s happening online with SMW12? Love data? Whether it’s your first time participating with SMW12 or your third, you’ve never seen realtime action like this. Social Media Week is proud to present SMW RealTime, powered by Nokia and presented by The Guardian. A 5-page data aggregation dashboard pulling all the real-time data from Social Media Week globally and locally.

And here are the top 5 things you need to know about it.

1. It looks pretty, if we may say so. Instead of just pushing out data, RealTime largely uses infographics to visualize all the data coming out of SMW12. With graphs and images, and a pretty user-friendly layout, it makes exploring events, cities and SMW12 easy on the eyes.

2. It’s multilayered. Data can be broken down on a global, city and event level. If it’s an official hashtag, it’s being tracked. So, use those city hashtags and handles and tweet away!

3. It’s interactive. Each day of SMW12, we’ll ask you a different question. How do you use social and digital? How does that play out in your life? Some are fun; others more serious. The results will then be highlighted and tracked right in RealTime.

4. It’s trending. Ok, it’s not really. But we’re looking at what’s trending and will feature trending topics from SMW12 on each of the 3 levels: event, city, and global. RealTime breaks down the number of tweets per hashtag and topic and lets you know the most popular Twitter handles, keeping you in the know. You can even follow the most popular tweeters straight from the dashboard!

5. It’s tracking it all. Number of events on a daily and weekly basis? Check. (Today we’re at 192 events.) Number of attendees? (That’s 89,450 registrations.) Speakers and number of venues? (Got that, too: 2137 speakers, 483 venues.) RealTime also tracks Foursquare check-ins, so make sure you check-ins! But make sure you’re watching the dashboard. Because it’s in real-time, you can’t go back!

Bonus tip: The teams behind it are Dopamine and Benard. We’re very grateful for their hard work!

See it in action here.

Maybe you have seen one, a Facebook post from one of your 500 friends saying how down they feel and how they are thinking about hurting themselves. When you see this post not only are you witnessing someone else is crisis, but it puts you in a crisis of your own. What should you do? What if this is a hoax – but what if it isn’t?

Facebook has recognized this issue and its severity, and has taken steps to make their site safer. Last week the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline partnered with Facebook to provide a chat service for those who are in suicidal crisis. So now when someone says they are going to kill themselves on Facebook and someone reports it (by using the existing reporting system) Facebook then reaches out to offer a chat service. I want to underscore here that for this system to work, Facebook users need to report the suicidal content. You and I are the first responders. I can’t think of a better use for the internet.

The Lifeline has received over 3 million calls to 1-800-273-TALK (8255) since its launch in 2005. However people who like to express themselves online may not want to pick up the phone, so a chat service is a better match for them. “Our Facebook community requested this service, they have reached out to us to say, I need help but I don’t want to call. Do you have text? Do you have chat?” says Lidia Bernik, Associate Project Director at Lifeline. “We have listened to our community and with the help of Facebook we are getting them the help they need and have asked for.”

This is great advancement for suicide prevention as Lifeline adds to its hotline services. One of the most exciting facets to this new technology is the data it affords the suicide prevention community. A conversion rate, from when help is offered to help received, will now be available. This is very valuable information that has eluded the hotline.

The chat service is much needed as more and more people go Facebook to make their cry for help. Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers student who died by suicide last year, posted this on Facebook right before his death: “Jumping off the GW bridge sorry.” What if someone reported that? What if Tyler began chatting online with a suicide crisis counselor?

For more information on the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org or find them on Facebook facebook.com/800273TALK

This past Social Media Week, we unveiled our Top 10 Social Media Events of 2011. And as the year closes, several new events have got our attention- events that fell in line with our listing of events that were defined and fundamentally shaped by the use of media.

Due to this, Social Media Week has reviewed our top 10 events and compiled our Year in Review of Top Social Media Events of 2011.

1. Arab Spring and the Middle Eastern uprisings
While the original uprising in the Arab Spring began in 2010, the latter part of 2011 saw great changes in these areas, from the stepping down of Mubarak and further unrest between the Egyptian military and civilians to Libyan dictator Qaddafi’s death to Yemen seeing Selah step down this November. Behind it all, was social media helping organize protesters and revolutionaries, enable citizen journalism, and garner public support.
Japanese earthquake and tsunami
As one of the world’s worst earthquakes and tsunami’s ravaged a nation, the rest of the world watched as this terrible disaster played out in real-time, with tweets and videos being posted within minutes. Fortunately, the world did not just sit by and watch but also mobilized to provide assistance- from Crisis Commons to Google’s People Finder to online donations pouring in. Photo by Kordian
Occupy Wall Street
Inspired by success in other countries, a small group of protesters gathered in NYC’s Zuccotti Park in October- creating the US’s first major protest scene since the 70′s. Spanning over 1000 cities around the world, thousands have banded together to speak out against economic inequality and other mounting injustices. Technology and social media have been instrumental in organizing the protests, disseminating the movement’s global message, and documenting police responses, often culminating in several hundred thousands of views on their UStream and Livestreamed events. Photo by Light Cue 23

Death of Steve Jobs
The death of Steve Jobs, the epitome of tech innovation, created a wake in the tech and cultural world unrivaled since the death of Michael Jackson. Tweets, impromptu memorials, Facebook posts, montage videos- all flooded the web for the weeks following. And we could not soon forget this icon, with his autobiography being released just two weeks after his death.
Rebecca Black’s Friday and subsequent backlash
No other meme shined brighter- and longer- than Rebecca Black’s Friday. And the public mocking and backlash raised important questions about digital abuse and how our cultures treat fame. While we still debate how society should respond, the music industry is learning that traditional business models aren’t as effective without utilizing the vast advances in technology.

6. High-Speed Access Being Seen as a Right
Many nations are now making vast improvements to access to high-speed, broadband wireless access. With the EU demanding that all nations allocate 800MHz band available for wireless and US President Obama making access a priority, technology is now longer just a way to achieve equality- it is becoming a right in and of itself.

7. UK Riots
While not as long-standing as the revolutions- nor as politically effective- three long nights of rioting in London were being blamed on text and instant messaging on mobile devices. British police broke into smart phones to thwart planned attacks on local establishments, and even considered blocking access to social networking sites altogether. Followed shortly by US city San Francisco’s transit’s banning of cell service, many citizens around the globe began to wonder if their governments might also start restricting or investigating access further.

8. Hurricane Irene
While nowhere nearly as devastating as the Japanese disaster, Hurricane Irene was an online storm in it’s own right. Storm chasers didn’t need to leave their home to follow the path of Hurricane Irene, as it made its way up the East Coast in August, conjuring tweets on par with the traffic after the Japan earthquake.

9. Anthony Weiner Twitter scandal
Few can forget US politician Anthony Weiner’s plight, the world’s first true 21st century political scandal. Born through the use of and then broken, spread and developed by social media, Weiner’s misuse of DM’s caused his political demise and highlighted on the way social media tools are impacting the way politicians communicate with their constituents and the broader public for years to come. Photo by Marc Faletti

Social Media IPO’s
We’ve seen vast changes in the funding of social media companies. With successful startups like Pandora, Facebook, and LinkedIn going public and a growing list of other companies that will follow suit. And we can’t forget start-ups like Diaspora and other Kickstarter grantees- forcing us to re-evaluate how companies can be funded and who the main investors just might be.
