Improvised Innovation: The Second City and The Chicago Tribune (SMW Chicago)

We want Glasgow to demonstrate the breadth of impact social media and mobile communications is having through diversity of topic, venue, participants, hosts and event types and we are getting bowled over on every one of those fronts. We will have tweetups, flashmobs, workshops, seminars and speaker-led events to really cover the map.”

Traffic jams, food, co-working, renovation: this and many other themes unite people through social networks.

A Look Through Social Media at Our Host Cities: Starting With Los Angeles

With the second Social Media Week of 2011 starting to creep up, Sysomos, a Marketwire company, is happy to once again be involved in this exciting week of learning, sharing and connecting. As with the February 2011 SMW Sysomos will be providing social media monitoring and statistics including daily blog posts. However, this time we also are getting involved long before Social Media Week actually starts.

Using Sysomos’ industry leading software for social media monitoring and analytics, MAP and Heartbeat, we have instant and unlimited access to all social media conversations and can quickly see what’s happening, why it’s happening and who’s driving the conversations. Through the use of contextual text analytics and data mining technology, Sysomos collects data from blogs, Twitter, social networks, message boards, forums, wikis and major news sources so that we always have a pulse on what’s going on in social media. We plan to use all of this data to bring you insights on what’s happening during Social Media Week as well as what is happening in official SMW cities leading up to the event.

Starting this week we will be shedding some light on social media in each of the 12 official cities that will be hosting Social Media Week events in September. In these posts we will be providing some general data on how social media is being used in each of these cities as well as what specifically these cities are talking about in relation to social media. Hopefully these posts will help to raise awareness of what aspects of social media are important and on people’s minds in each city and maybe even inspire a few sessions for SMW.

To kick off our series we are starting with a city that everyone knows, the city of angels, Los Angeles. For this analysis we decided to look back at six months worth of data to provide some high-level demographics and analysis of what is going on in the social sphere in Los Angeles. Then, as a next step, we reanalyzed the data to dig deeper into what people in Los Angeles were actually saying about social media.

Over the past six months our Sysomos social media monitoring and analytics platform was able to find 431,112 blog posts, 84,133 online news articles, 3.5 million forum postings and 67.3 million tweets that were marked as originating from Los Angeles.

Graphed out in a popularity chart we can see a timeline of how all thius social media action took place. Twitter, just by sheer numbers overshadows most of the other mediums. However, we can see that social media traffic seemed to hold a steady pace over the first part of the year and then in April traffic of tweets coming from Los Angeles seemed to start to grow and has been on a semi-steady incline ever since.

Next, we pulled up a word cloud that crosses all mediums Sysomos scans. Here we can see the words that are appearing the most in all talk in social media coming out of Los Angeles. While it’s hard to get a story from this word cloud as it’s not looking at a specific topic, we can still get an idea of what’s on the minds of social mediaites in Los Angeles

A deeper dive into who is writing blog posts that come out of Los Angeles actually reveals quite a bit about the social media scene there. Firstly, we looked at the industires that these blogs tagged themselves as writing about. No surprise here, but the majority of blogs in the Los Angeles area say that they write about arts, meaning movies, television, music and other art forms.  Following arts, communication is the second most blogged about industry.

We then got a little bit more granular to find out who was writing these blogs. Our system, which scans for user provided data, showed that 64% of blogs from Los Angeles are being written by males with the other 36% being written by females. We also found that 41.6% of blogs are being written by bloggers aged 21-35. 27.6% of blogs are being written by people aged 35-50, being followed by people 20 and under at 16.6% and finally those aged 50 and above making up 14% of bloggers in Los Angeles.

Twitter is a bit harder to pull demographics from as the service doesn’t require a user to provide any data beyond a name and a location (and some people don’t even supply a location). Luckily, thanks to a industry exclusive system we’ve developed at Sysomos we are able to identify the gender of Twitter users. A look at the last six month of tweets from Los Angeles reveals that the gender distribution on Twitter is quite even with males accounting for 51% of tweets and females 49%.

For the next set of data, we looked at activity in social media coming from Los Angeles that specifically referenced social media (talked about it). Here we found 4,034 blog posts, 349 online news articles, 452 forum posts and 84,421 tweets that specifically mention social media.

From this activity we then ran a buzzgraph report. Buzzgraphs show the words being used most in conjunction with our search term (in the case “social media”) and how those words are connected. Looking across all social mediums we were able to plot out the buzzgraph you see bellow. Right in the center we can see Facebook and Twitter and strong connections between the two, so we can assume that these two social networks are being talked about the most when people in Los Angeles are talkgn about social media. Around the outskirts of the buzzgraph we can see some other topics that are being talked about a lot in realtion to social media such as “marketing,” “communications,” “politics,” “promotions” and “business” to single out a few.

From these words we then plotted out a top ten chart of the most popular words being used when talking about social media to hopefully help inspire ideas for Social Media Week sessions and panels. The top ten words being used when talking about social media in Los Angeles are:

  1. Network
  2. People
  3. Share or sharing
  4. Business or businesses
  5. Twitter
  6. Politics
  7. Promoted and promotions
  8. Facebook
  9. Tweet
  10. Website

Hopefully this post has helped to shed a little light on the social media world of Los Angeles. We’re also interested to know what kind of information you, our audience, is interested to know about in regards to our 12 (now 11) Social Media Week host cities, so please leave a comment bellow and we’ll try to work in some of the suggestions to future posts.

We’ll see you soon for our next installment here or feel free to interact with us in-between posts through Twitter by contacting @Sysomos or myself at @40deuce.

Event Partner Spotlight: The Paley Center For Media

Providing interesting spaces for Social Media Week events is an important part of what makes our events so exciting. We achieve this goal by identifying and connecting with partner organizations in Social Media Week cities that own beautiful, unique or underused spaces and opening them up for SMW events. One of our most valued and long-running partners on this front has been the venerable media institution The Paley Center for Media, and we are pleased to announce that the Paley Center will be reprising their role as an event partner this September for a number of events.

The Paley Center for Media–formerly the Museum of Television & Radio–with locations in New York and Los Angeles, is a leader in discussions about the cultural, creative, and social significance of television, radio, and emerging platforms for the professional community and media-interested public. Through their host of public programs, including PaleyFest, InsideMedia and DocFest, offer fans and enthusiasts of media the chance to see screenings of their favorite programs and listen to in-depth discussions explaining on what goes on behind the scenes. On the other side, their Industry Programs provide the opportunity for media business executives to get together to debate and discuss pressing issues facing all spectrums of media, communications and technology, through over forty annual events in their Media Council and International Council series.

For Social Media Week last February in New York, the Paley Center served host to the SMW Global Press Conference as well two panels on branding and social CSR (click for links to videos of each session). Thanks to the great generosity of the Paley Center in Los Angeles and its Executive Director Craig Hitchcock, this September they will again host three events, detailed below:

Virtual Event Spotlight: The Twelethon and Inner-City Arts

One of the most exciting components of the September 20, 2010 Social Media Week Global Press Conference at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, will be the launch of a unique and powerful fundraising website, Twelethon.com, organized by Social Media Week LA city partner Erick Brownstein and his team at the New Agency.

Consisting of one part talent show, one part non-profit and many parts social media, Twelethon.com will wrap the mission of raising funds for a downtown Los Angeles Inner-City Arts organization around the dynamic concept of a creative content hub throughout Social Media Week this September 20-24. Inner-City Arts, site of the SMW Opening Party on Monday evening, has been an oasis of creativity and learning in the heart of LA’s Skid Row since 1989, and Social Media Week LA is very enthusiastic about working with them on this project.

Beginning September 13th, people from all corners of the social media landscape – celebrities, activists, bloggers, artists and more – will be invited to record and submit their personal interpretations of the Twelethon’s tagline, ‘Express Yourself: Creativity Matters.’  Submitted videos can be up to three minutes in length and will display the variety of ways people express themselves creatively; from a tap dance to a short film to a few jokes…even finger painting with their kids. Amateurs and professionals alike will commingle on Twelethon.com with both recorded content, livestreamed performances and an ongoing live feed from the event’s Creativity Room in Hollywood.

“Creativity inspires creativity and we’re hoping for a snowball effect of creative expression, ultimately inspiring people to support Inner-City Arts with a financial donation,” explains Erick Brownstein, founder of The New Agency and lead organizer of Social Media Week Los Angeles. “The beauty of the Twelethon and social media in general is that it can provide an open platform inviting participation from the young and the old, the famous and the aspiring, the talented and the…inspired.”

Adds Inner-City Arts President and CEO Cynthia Harnisch: “We are thrilled to be working with Social Media Week Los Angeles on Twelethon.com. Our organization was founded on a belief in the power of creativity and innovation and the Twelethon beautifully captures that spirit.”

‘The Twelethon site is produced and powered by the generous efforts of LA city partner Simian/Volta Media. You can check Simian out at gosimian.com.

Please take the time to find out more about this project at Twelethon.com and we encourage you to contribute in whatever way you are able. For more information, please contact SMW LA coordinator Dawn Sinko at Dawn@TheNewAgency.com.

Ben Scheim is vice president of partnerships and communications for Crowdcentric and a director of Social Media Week. Please reach out to him if you are interested in discussing brand partnerships or sponsorships for Social Media Week. He can be reached at ben@crowdcentric.net.

Social Media Week City Focus: What’s Happening In Los Angeles

This is the first in a series of posts zoning in on the various cities of Social Media Week September 2010 and taking a look at the exciting things going on there.

Today we will focus on Los Angeles, the largest of the five Social Media Weeks this September, and the global headquarters for the week.

With over fifty events on the schedule already, the only proper word to describe Social Media Week LA would be massive. While there’s no way we can fairly cover everything set to take place during the week, we’d like to offer you a quick overview now of some–but by no means all–of the highlights for the week. Check out the Los Angeles city page and the LA schedule to learn more!

The Inner-City Arts Twelethon
The Inner-City Arts Twelethon is without doubt one of the most significant pieces to the week, and is significant enough that it deserves its own separate post. Serving as a platform to benefit Inner-City Arts (ICA), for over twenty years ICA has been an oasis of learning, achievement and creativity for under-served children in the heart of Skid Row. The “Twelethon” is the fund-raising component running throughout the entire week. From the opening press conference at 9am on Monday morning to the closing party on Friday night and every event in between, we will use the conference as a platform to generate awareness about the crisis of creativity in the educational system and raise funds to support arts and learning.  More to come on this event on the global and LA city SMW blogs, but please contact LA city partner Erick Brownstein to learn more.

Opening Party
At the Inner-City Arts campus, we will be joined by Sir Ken Robinson and others to officially kick-off Social Media Week. We will call attention to the Twelethon, the virtual telethon that will be running all week to raise awareness about the crisis of creativity, to generate support for arts and learning and to raise funds for ICA.

The Future of the Social Web, sponsored by Meebo
In a future where an individual’s social graph will be entirely portable, a future where users can connect to each other from their websites and others, and advertisers can interact with consumers within this environment, what are the new approaches to design, content optimization and advertising experience? Brought to you by Social Media Week Global Gold sponsor Meebo, this session will be presented by their CEO Seth Sternberg and facilitated by top design thinkers, in a highly interactive, experience-based workshop. The workshop will call upon leading figures from the spheres of design, content, and advertising to explore questions for how we can each can contribute to a richer and more connected social web.

Listening & Engaging with the Public: Political Process in Social Media
At City Hall’s prestigious Bradley Hall, this event will focus on how government uses social media to shape policy with their constituencies. Panelists will include city, state and federal government strategists and agency representatives.

Democracy Video Challenge Film Screening
With the US State Department, a screening hosted by the Director’s Guild of America of the six winning Democracy Video Challenge entries.  The Democracy Video Challenge is part of an initiative which empowers a global online audience to share their views on democracy by completing the phrase “Democracy is….”

CleanTech LA and Venture Capital
Industry panel discussing the application of social media platforms in the clean technology field.  Panelists will range from established social media cleantech groups to new clean tech initiatives seeking to capitalize on social media techniques.  This event will provide tremendous exposure to the Los Angeles Clean Technology community.

Location-Based Marketing: To Checkin or not to Checkin
This highly focused event will explore the potential of location-based marketing as a new channel. What’s in it for consumers? What’s in it for marketers? Companies present include DoubleDutch, MyTown, PlacePop, Stickybits and Whrrl.

Startup Demo
Hosted by Schmoozd, TechZulu and AsAble.com, StartupDemo is an opportunity for early stage startups to showcase their new products and/or services.  Founders use StartupDemo as an opportunity to get frank feedback from VCs, angels, peers and the technolust.

Live Nation at the House of Blues presents, “The Next Stage of Engage – Bringing Online Live Music Communities to Life”
A live whiteboard session with industry leaders from multiple touch points to live music fans. We will brainstorm how to connect the dots between: artist-to-fan direct, content sites, interactive platforms, venue operations and more.

Biomimicry: Social Media & Science
- A small group of graduate science students from USC’s Viterbi School pursuing careers in science journalism teleconference with a class at Stony Brook University in New York.  They will use an improvisation ‘game’ based on biomimicry to explore the productive paths for science journalism careers in a networked world.

Brands Engaging on the Social Web
Two panels will explore themes relevant to brands engaging with customers online:

  • Brand Assassins: Proactive defense: Social media provides brands with amazing opportunities to connect with consumers outside of traditional advertising. However, the new online landscape also creates additional risk for businesses online.
  • Building a Connected Brand: A Case Study in Integrated Marketing: This panel will explore the strategies and results around a very successful and fully integrated online campaign from Avery Office Products. Attendees will learn how Avery has personified the concept of a Connected Brand to bring the strengths of analytics, SEM, social, and display to the forefront of their marketing plan in new and innovative way

And this is just a starting list of the over fifty events taking place during the week. Again, check out the Los Angeles city page and the LA schedule to learn more, and go here if you want to get involved!

Ben Scheim is vice president of partnerships and communications for Crowdcentric and a director of Social Media Week. Please reach out to him if you are interested in discussing brand partnerships or sponsorships for Social Media Week. He can be reached at ben@crowdcentric.net.

Amazing Brand Partner Opportunities with Social Media Week

As you all know Social Media Week is just under four weeks away and we’re incredibly excited to see the depth and diversity of each cities program of events–and best yet, there are still many opportunities for you and your brand to get involved.

The teams in LA, Milan, Bogotá, Buenos Aires and Mexico City are pulling together a global program consisting of more than 200 events, covering industry sectors such as politics, publishing, film, education, music and also topics such as the rise location based services, social media monitoring and metrics and social graph optimization.

This year the conference is supported by some of the world’s largest media companies, including the New York Times, The Financial TimesFox Latin-America and El Tiempo. Also, we are delighted to be working with the US State Department on a very unique event that will be live streamed around the world, which aims to celebrate US technology innovation.

To fulfill our goal, which is to connect people globally around emerging trends in social and mobile media, we are looking to provide a number of unique services, which we are looking for brands to support. If your brand or perhaps one of your clients is interested in supporting any of the following initiatives, we would love to hear from you:

- Live streaming: We have secured a company to be announced soon as our global streaming partner, but we are looking for a brand to be the global sponsor of our live streamed events, which will be watched by more than 50,000 people in 80 different countries.

- Location Services: We are looking to launch a real-time application that allows visitors to our site to see who is checking in to Social Media Week events, where they are on a map and what the primary hot spots in any given city are. We are looking for a brand to support this application.

- WiFi & Mobile Connectivity: Providing WiFi is always a challenge, especially given the distributed nature of the conference. We would love to be able to provide mobile hotspots at multiple venues throughout the participating cities.

- Real-time Conversation: With literally thousands participating to help make Social Media Week a success, the level of real-time communication and collaboration is incredible. We will be building out an solution that aggregates everything into one application and delivers the real-time feed in a compelling and visually interesting way. This application could be branded by one of your organization or one you know.

- Social Scheduling: Over the coming weeks, tens of thousands of people will be interacting with our social scheduling tool as they plan their personal program. The scheduling tools, run by our partner SCHED*, receive a huge level of traffic and can be branded in a number of different ways. We are also considering launching a iPhone version of the schedule, which can also be branded.

- Translation: Social Media Week will be hosted in Italian, English and Spanish languages. We are building out a number of tools to help share as much of the content as possible in as many languages as possible. We would love to do more and finding a way to align a brand with this opportunity would be terrific.

It Begins! Social Media Week LA Announces Schedule for September 20-24

Hopefully most Los Angeles based Social Media enthusiasts have left their mid-September calendars open, because it’s looking for them like September 20-24 is suddenly about to get very busy!

We’re very excited to announce that we have published of our first city schedule for the September edition of Social Media Week, for SMW Los Angeles. You can view the LA schedule by going to to the LA city page and navigating to the schedule tab, or else by going directly to losangeles.socialmediaweek.org.

Thanks to the hard work of LA city partner Erick Brownstein and the New Agency team, Social Media Week LA launches with nearly fifty events confirmed already and many more in the works–hopefully reaching eighty or more by the time Social Media Week rolls around September 20. Events will be taking place all over the LA environs. With the city of Los Angeles is signed on as a host and partner organizations like Meebo, the Financial Times, MTV, USC, and LAist participating, it’s safe to say that Los Angeles is about to become a hotbed of social media activity.

Check out the LA city page to learn more, and check back here for more city schedule release announcements!
