Social Media Week

partners

Full Coverage: TNW and SMW12

This February, we were honored to have The Next Web among our ranks of media partners. Just 4 years old, The Next Web is already one of the world’s largest online publications. It provides an international perspective on all things related to Internet technology, business and culture.

But they don’t stop there. TNW also hosts an in-house lab focused on creating new social projects. Every use Twitter Counter? They’re the brains behind it. And if you haven’t, you should. Twitter Counter started as a self-funded startup in our head office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Today with 800,000+ monthly visits, it has grown into the number one stats site for Twitter users.

We thank The Next Web for taking part in SMW12 and expanding our reach- so there’s more of you joining us. And we hope you share some love to TNW, too. In case you missed their coverage, we’ve got it all here for you:

If you want more TNW, check out their upcoming conference. The Next Web are hosting their 7th Annual Conference in Amsterdam! With speakers like Alexis Ohanian, Co-founder Reddit, Delicious’ Chad Hurley, Kevin Rose, and Amazon’s Werner Vogels, TNW has ramped up their conference to inspire, to provide an unforgettable experience, and help you get the best ROI you can imagine. April 25th is just around the corner, so check them out now.

Renew Corporate Partners and Get the Ones That Got Away

This is the 6th in an 8-part series, where Brady will teach you how to increase your fundraising and better prepare your nonprofit organization for events in 2012. Catch up on parts onetwothree, four, and five of this series.

“Undersell and over-deliver.”

It’s advice we’ve all heard and it couldn’t be more true. Getting over the fear of asking for what your organization needs takes practice. As we talked about last week, the more you reach out, the more opportunities you’ll create for your organization.

When a corporate sponsor gives you money, use it how you promised you will.

People ask for things everyday and don’t always get what they want, but it never hurts to ask. Besides, worst-case scenario, a prospect says yes. Why would that be the worst thing, you ask? Because that’s when the real work starts and you have to put your “money where your mouth is.”

This is a vital step in your relationship with a prospect. If they put money on the table it is up to you and your team to make sure their funds get used appropriately. If they don’t, you won’t be hearing from them anytime soon. If they have a wonderful experience though, you will have a foundation to build on and evolve the relationship over time.

There are three things you need to always keep in mind for each partner:

  • Ever find your small donors to be more demanding than a large donor ones? There is nothing worse than being drained by a relationship that should be inspiring and rewarding. Set boundaries and expectations early to educate your partner about what is appropriate for your organization.
  • Keep in touch. A corporate partner is a celebrity in your organization, so treat them like one. Celebrate them when appropriate and be sure to send a handwritten thank you note at least once a year.
  • Do what you say you are going to do with their money – every penny of it! Provide each partner with solid reporting of their funds and a nice re-cap of their involvement at the end of each year. Adding pictures of their employees volunteering or attending an event is always a nice touch!

If you are able to keep these three things in mind, you will build great relationships that you can build on and renew over time. You’ll find some companies want the same package every year, while others will need help finding a new place in the organization and will vary in their sponsorship level. That is OK, too.

Now, what about those prospects that you had countless calls or meetings with and they just never took the leap?

Those can be tricky. Some will be organizations that you’ll want to write off, because they will just never commit (or when they do, won’t feel like a great fit). You have to trust your gut here. The ones where timing just wasn’t right, you need to stay alert, and keep in touch, especially if new opportunities come to the table for your organization.

Chris Cotner, Executive Director of Water4, mentioned at this past year’s Vivanista Summit, that he enters the company and the name of any VIPs within the org to Google Alerts to get up-to-the-minute information without even having to hunt for it (I know you are saying to yourself, “why didn’t I think of that?!”).

If something interesting to you pops up, ping them by sending a short note referencing the article or news story they appeared in. It always feels good to be noticed and it’s a great way to stay on the radar and keep the conversation going. Be genuine about it though. Nobody likes a suck-up.

Each prospect will be different, but a good rule of thumb is to circle back quarterly to  present new opportunities. It’s like fishing, you have to figure out what the fish are eating before you can hook one.

In the rare case a sponsor or partner has a bad experience with your organization, you and your executive director need to reach out right away and then just listen. It can be time consuming and difficult, but can potentially provide the organization with invaluable feedback on performance and services.

  • Ask if they have any suggestions for a solution to any outstanding issues or problems.
  • Request if you can share their feedback confidentially with your team and board members as a learning opportunity.
  • If you can, let them know what solutions the team comes up with to solve those issues. This is a great way to build trust with the prospect and grow as an organization.
  • Thank them for their past time and support.

If things go well, you have left the door open for opportunity to move forward once things have had a chance to heal.

If you enjoyed these exercises today, be sure to come back next week for part six where you’ll learn how to measure success and accountability. I’d love to hear how this worked for you. Tweet me @bradyhahn or leave your comments below.

Social Media Week London Announces Over 40 Events For February

Social Media Week London, run by local team Chinwag, announced today that they have confirmed over forty events to be included in the program this February 7-11 and look to add even more by the time the conference arrives.

Of this announcement, Chinwag said:

Yesterday, we put out a press release announcing some juicy tidbits of what’s in store for Social Media Week London.

The board in the office that we use for tracking confirmed events is slowly, but surely, being covered in luminous sticky notes. Actually, not that slowly. There’s still time to get involved, check out the website for more details.

Of the forty or so events confirmed, highlights include:

Behind the Scenes at the BBC – a chance to see how BBC uses social media across their programming and platforms with a chance to spend some social time with the team afterwards.

Social TV – A lunchtime discussion exploring the growth of two screens, how people watch TV and interact with a second device, how this impacts TV advertising and what social features like check-ins and TV-based apps will bring.

Public Sector Huddle – Dell and professional social network Viadeo, will host a half-day unconference exploring how social media is effecting government, NHS, councils and the public sector.

Social Media Week Measurement Challenge – social media metrics companies will be invited to measure the week’s coverage on social channels and present their findings at the end of the week, along with a panel and best practice measurement clinic.

And much more to come in the days ahead. There’s no doubt that Social Media Week London is going to be great!

Virtual Event Spotlight: The Twelethon and Inner-City Arts

One of the most exciting components of the September 20, 2010 Social Media Week Global Press Conference at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, will be the launch of a unique and powerful fundraising website, Twelethon.com, organized by Social Media Week LA city partner Erick Brownstein and his team at the New Agency.

Consisting of one part talent show, one part non-profit and many parts social media, Twelethon.com will wrap the mission of raising funds for a downtown Los Angeles Inner-City Arts organization around the dynamic concept of a creative content hub throughout Social Media Week this September 20-24. Inner-City Arts, site of the SMW Opening Party on Monday evening, has been an oasis of creativity and learning in the heart of LA’s Skid Row since 1989, and Social Media Week LA is very enthusiastic about working with them on this project.

Beginning September 13th, people from all corners of the social media landscape – celebrities, activists, bloggers, artists and more – will be invited to record and submit their personal interpretations of the Twelethon’s tagline, ‘Express Yourself: Creativity Matters.’  Submitted videos can be up to three minutes in length and will display the variety of ways people express themselves creatively; from a tap dance to a short film to a few jokes…even finger painting with their kids. Amateurs and professionals alike will commingle on Twelethon.com with both recorded content, livestreamed performances and an ongoing live feed from the event’s Creativity Room in Hollywood.

“Creativity inspires creativity and we’re hoping for a snowball effect of creative expression, ultimately inspiring people to support Inner-City Arts with a financial donation,” explains Erick Brownstein, founder of The New Agency and lead organizer of Social Media Week Los Angeles. “The beauty of the Twelethon and social media in general is that it can provide an open platform inviting participation from the young and the old, the famous and the aspiring, the talented and the…inspired.”

Adds Inner-City Arts President and CEO Cynthia Harnisch: “We are thrilled to be working with Social Media Week Los Angeles on Twelethon.com. Our organization was founded on a belief in the power of creativity and innovation and the Twelethon beautifully captures that spirit.”

‘The Twelethon site is produced and powered by the generous efforts of LA city partner Simian/Volta Media. You can check Simian out at gosimian.com.

Please take the time to find out more about this project at Twelethon.com and we encourage you to contribute in whatever way you are able. For more information, please contact SMW LA coordinator Dawn Sinko at Dawn@TheNewAgency.com.

Following up on the release of its schedule yesterday, here are some updates what’s happening during Social Media Week in Bogotá this September 20 to 24.

The week’s agenda for Social Media Week Bogotá will be based on three main themes, split up over the days of the week:

On Monday and Tuesday, events will focus on the “Backend of Social Media”, featuring discussions that will go in-depth on technical content, operation behind networks, deployments, and more. Workshops and conferences will discuss processes and methodologies to develop behind-the-curtain social media strategies for companies.

“Social Media in Colombian businesses” will be the focus of Wednesday and Thursday. Conversations will hit upon issues aimed at policy makers and personnel involved in implementing social media strategies in business, including what has been done already, what are the trends, and where will things go. Included will be a workshop to learn how to design a strategy that fits your needs. The events will take place in selected auditoriums around Bogotá on Wednesday and at HUBBog on Thursday.

On Friday, the week’s final day, the focus will be the media featuring panels with the participation of many of the most important media leaders of the Columbia. One panel will cover what has been learned from past political campaigns, and the event will be closed with a panel of the main media outlets of Colombia, on their state today and their vision for evolution with social media. Columbian news leader El Tiempo, one of the global media partners of Social Media Week, will participate in this panel and provide facilities for events on this last day of Social Media Week.
