What The Social World Has to Say About Our Hosts: San Francisco

Hello again! Sheldon from Sysomos here as we draw ever closer to the kickoff of Social Media Week. As we lead up to the big week, I’ve been using Sysomos’ industry leading social media monitoring and analytics software, MAP and Heartbeat, to look at what the world is saying about our host cities. For this installment, I’ll be focusing in on a social media and tech leading US city, San Francisco, California.

Searching over the past six months for mentions of “San Francisco” or the commonly used “SF” in social media, I was able to find 1.4 million blog posts, 1.3 million online news articles, 1.6 million forum postings and 2.5 million tweets.

Being that San Francisco is a hotbed for social and tech related startups, it’s no wonder that when we trend that data out over time we see a lot of activity talking about it over the past six months. The activity seemed to lul a bit over the holidays in December, but then picked right back up again in January. But we’ll explore some of this activity in a little bit.

I then looked into where all this talk of San Francisco was coming from. Not surprising is that the majority of talk is coming from right within the United States (65.9%). We then also see the other two countries that tend to always be sources of activity, Canada (4.3%) and the UK (3.9%). Here we can also see that France seems to mention San Francisco quite often as well (3.3%). Perhaps this is because France is becoming well known as a home for European social and tech startups, so they feel the connection, or are at least interested, in their American counterpart.

Next, I pulled up a buzzgraph to see what all this talk over the past six months was about. What is interesting in this buzzgraph was that I was expecting to see a lot of tech related talk, and there was some, but there was a lot more talk about sports. Right in the center of the graph we can see words like “release” which refer to some tech companies from San Francisco releasing new and updated programs and devices. However, around the outskirts of the graph, we see a lot more words that making reference to sports, such as “49ers,” the San Francisco NFL team, “winning,” as they went quite far into the football season this year, and “Giants,” the team that beat them to go on to the Super Bowl.

Next I dove a little deeper into tis data to find out who the people that were creating this buzz were. On Twitter I found that 61% of all San Francisco mentions were coming from males and only 39% from females. Perhaps this ties back to the abundance of football related talk we saw in the buzzgraph. I also pulled up the top twitter accounts talking about San Francisco. This is a list of the top 12 accounts that mention San Francisco the most and have a higher than average authority score. Most of the accounts I found seem common, such as classified type accounts like @jobs4SF (11.76%), and news accounts like @breakingsfnews (12.61%). As well, I also found the football theme again when @49ersbuzztap also showed up as a top source (5.88%).

I then examined the people creating the 1.4 million blog posts mentioning San Francisco. Here I found that the gender split was the exact same as on Twitter, with the males at 61% and females at 39%. Interestingly enough, the age of bloggers aged 21-35 are usually the highest group we see, but here they only accounted for 39.2% of the blogs. I found that bloggers aged 36-50 actually talk about San Francisco the most and account for 50% of all the mentions.

I also found something interesting when I looked at what industry the blogs talking about San Francisco belong to. Again I was thinking that we would see a lot of technology focused blogs and possibly sports. However, I found that education blogs mentioned San Francisco the most at 12.5%. The second largest industry was publishing at 10.4%. Marketing blogs came in third at 8.3% which I suppose plays a little towards my tech theory as a lot of marketing blogs these days talk a lot about online and social media related marketing.

Lastly, I delved into a few of the activity spikes we’ve seen about San Francisco over the past six months. I started with this spike in both Twitter and forum activity that occurred around October 17-21. Once again I was shocked to learn that most of the talk at this time revolved around football. Here, there was a game in which the “49ers’” “manager”  Jim “Harbaugh” had a little outburst in the game against the “Detroit” Lions’ coach. This event seemed to grab the attention of the entire football community who aren’t used to seeing such public emotion from a coach.

Lastly, I looked into the two large spikes we see towards the end of the chart between January 13-23. Again, this spike revolved around the San Francisco 49ers. These two spikes took place during the NFC playoffs. The “49ers” made their way into the playoffs this season and made it past the first round by defeating Drew “Brees” and the New “Orleans” “Saints.” However, the 49ers lost their chance to go to the Super Bowl the following week to “Eli” Manning and the New “York” “Giants.”

The one thing that I learned from doing this study was that geeks like myself may mainly think of startups, tech and social medi when we think about San Francisco, but the rest of the world seems to have football and the 49ers on the brain.  I’ll be back again soon with another Sysomos look at yet another Social Media Week host cities.

City Spotlight- Social Media Week San Francisco

When we think of major tech scenes in the US, often two locations come to mind: NYC and San Francisco. Both are participating in Social Media Week February. And our city organizers in San Francisco are really pulling together a phenomenal week. Headed up by Beyond, a digital consultancy and agency based in New York, London, and of course, San Francisco, we are looking forward to a week in San Francisco full of content that people want to share and engage with. Pulling back the curtain, we want you to meet Mitchell, Faith and David on our SMW San Francisco team.

Mitchell Linden is the VP of Business Development at Beyond and is responsible for client acquisition and business relationships. Taking the lead on the Beyond’s SMW efforts, he is responsible for developing and leading the Beyond SMW team, as well as the advisory board, sponsors and developing engaging programing.

Faith Chihil is Beyond’s SMW webmaster and content coordinator, for creating the voice and personality of Social Media Week San Francisco.

1. What are the three most exciting things happening in social and mobile media in San Francisco?
1. The Evolution of User Reviews
It’s been very interesting to see companies vying to be the “Yelp of [insert industry here]” but what’s most compelling are those companies who are working to change the way users review products and services altogether. Tiny Reviews is a good example of a Bay Area-based company doing this.

2. Social Good
It’s fascinating to see how charitable organizations are looking to social media to create new user experiences. FairTrade USA here in Oakland is an example of a non-profit who took advantage of the mobile market and developed an app to capture user-generated information on where people can find Fair Trade Certified products around the country, as well as give access to their database of retailers.

3. Social Commerce
One area which is particularly exciting is the number of platforms and technologies that are increasingly closing the link between sharing content and a purchase transaction. This presents huge opportunities for brands to trace a tangible link between someone sharing some information about a brand or product with their social graph which then results in a purchase. Companies such as BuddyMedia with its Spinback acquisition all the way through to mobile payment solutions such as Google’s mobile wallet are going to totally transfrom the link from social to commerce.

2. What makes San Francisco a great city for Social Media Week?
FAITH: To grab an outdated quote from MTV Cribs, “This is where the magic happens.” The innovation that is growing here in Silicon Valley is incredible, so much that we actually can’t contain it all in San Francisco itself. We’re expanding SMW to reach into South Bay this year, which is pretty exciting.

3. What three things are you hoping to gain from hosting Social Media Week?
DAVID: Beyond is a relatively new company that is lucky enough to work for some amazing brands (Google, Apple, Facebook, YouTube) based here in Silicon Valley, all of whom play a pivotal role in driving the social economy, and yet, we are also lucky enough to have clients that are 50:50 split between marketing and comms. Given our background and perspective we want to use SMW to do three things:

1. Bring together the world’s of comms and marketing, whether agency or in-house.
2. Shine a light on the Bay Area’s contribution to creating the technologies that are powering the social economy.
3. Provide content for brands that will help them navigate an increasingly complex space

4. Where do you see the future of social and mobile media heading?
DAVID: I think one of the areas we are pretty excited about is the opportunities that the combination that social and mobile presents for moving social media from being about what have you done (some would say bragging) to what you are going to do. It will move social from being about the past to being about the future. For example social apps will increasing help make suggestions based on your location and your friends actions. Foursquare is already an early enabler of this type of interaction. On top of that, the combination of social and mobile will become the default way that you discover stuff you want to buy, watch or listen to in the future. This has some fairly major implications for every single industry from retail to entertainment to travel to finance. It’s hard to imagine where it will lead but it sure is an amazing change to be a part of.

5. What event are you most excited about thus far?
FAITH: I’m really interested in our Developer-focused sessions. As someone who is constantly looking for ways to relate to the people in different communities, I think we cannot overstress the importance of knowing your audience and especially your (potential) employees. We’re organizing a Developer Relations talk where we’re looking to hold a discussion with specialists and devs from a wide range of industries. We also want to host some live events where developers can participate. I can’t wait to see what people will brew up in February!

Thanks to Faith, David and Mitchell for sharing with us a bit more about Social Media Week San Francisco. You can stay connected with Social Media Week San Francisco on their blog and on Twitter and Facebook.

Event Spotlights: Hosted by Meebo

Meebo is hosting breakfast and lunch events in New York and San Francisco, so check out these exciting discussions on both the East and West Coasts while you get your grub on!

What’s the event? The Social Web – Have We Arrived? Breakfast in New York and Lunch in San Francisco

What time? NY: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM; SF: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Who is hosting the event? Meebo
What’s the event all about? Often labeled a fad, a buzzword or a mystery, the notion of “social” on the Web is at the heart of many misconceptions, and with good reason. The definition of the social web continues to change in fundamental ways. There is already evidence that this year will mark even more change, as people look to connect more seamlessly around Web content – articles, photos, videos and more – no matter where they are on the Web.

These connections around content will define our social experience, and they represent a tremendous business opportunity for website owners, publishers and advertisers. For the first time, the traditional idea of an algorithmic-driven Web experience, where content is primarily found through search, is challenged by a people-centric Web experience, where it is discovered through shared connections.

Meebo will lead a discussion on the changing definition of the “social Web.”  This conversation will explore whether the social Web has truly arrived, how people are currently using it and what website owners and brand advertisers need to consider when they think about the social Web and their target audiences.

About Meebo: Integrating all social networks and communications channels into a single, simple-to-use solution, Meebo enables users to easily share content and communicate in real time with the people who matter to them (via website).

Social Media Week Announces Dates & Cities for February 2011 Event

Hot on the heels of the immensely successful Social Media Week September, we at Social Media Week are pleased to announce our next global conference, scheduled to be held this February 7-11, 2011.

The next iteration of Social Media Week will take place simultaneously in New York, London, San Francisco, Toronto, São Paulo, Paris, and Rome, with more cities to be added in the next couple weeks. The first five are all returning cities from February 2010 and Paris and Rome are new additions to the community.

Social Media Week has quickly become one of the world’s most unique conferences, providing a global perspective on emerging trends in social & mobile media.  In 2010, New York-based organizers Crowdcentric hosted over 450 individual events in eleven cities, reaching more than 18,000 attendees with over 200,000 users connecting through the online and mobile experience, generating millions of impressions throughout the social web.

Unlike many traditional conferences, Social Media Week strives to maintain a model where free access to content, programming and events is made possible by support from brand partners including PepsiCoVodafoneNokiaMeebo and SalesForce.com.

“Over ninety percent of our content and programming is free and accessible to all attendees”, said Toby Daniels, CEO of Crowdcentric and Founder & Executive Director of Social Media Week.  “We believe that access to high-quality learning experiences, business networking and buyer /seller market places should not be exclusive to a limited number of executives and organizations that can afford it.”

The driving force behind Social Media Week in each respective city is the local city partners.  In Toronto, Entrinsic will be returning to produce Social Media Week for the second time.  Chinwag will be leading the effort in London.  São Paulo-based SixPix Content will produce the Brazilian conference.  Social Media Week San Francisco will be co-produced Swirl Integrated Marketing and Social Media Club, and La Netscouade will lead in Paris.

Paris city partner Benoît Thieulin said, “The opportunities to sit together for a moment and think collectively how social media will transform and further our relationships with the world (ourselves, the media, brands, institutions) are still rare.  It was natural to La Netscouade, as a leading social media agency, to step up and take care of introducing this global event to Paris and its flowering of initiatives on the social web.”

Milan-based Augmendy, producers of Social Media Week Milan, will also be bringing the experience to Rome.  Augmendy leads Marco Montemagno and Marco Antonio Masieri said, “We are absolutely delighted that Social Media Week Milan was such a success.  Over 5,000 people attended our ninety events during the week, with 20,000 more people visiting our headquarters, proving that 2010 is the tipping point for growth and development in the Italian web world.  We’re looking forward to an even bigger event in Rome in February.”

Beyond the Crowdcentric organizers and regional city partners, Social Media Week is made possible through its framework of globally connected organizations and individuals who contribute a significant amount to the programming of the conference.  If you or your organization would like to get involved as a city partner, event organizer, host, speaker or brand partner, please go here! Or, if you are a brand looking to reach a global audience of hyper-social influencers, either locally or globally, please contact Ben Scheim by email at ben@crowdcentric.net for more information.
