SMW Technology Partner Spotlight: Event Espresso

Today, we’re proud to spotlight one of our Global Technology partners, Event Espresso, the premiere event registration and management plugin for WordPress that allows you to turn your existing blog or website into a fully featured event management website. Event Espresso is the powering force behind the new Social Media Week global event system, which was launched in early August 2011.

Event Espresso

“Event Espresso has helped to create a scheduling and registration platform for Social Media Week that gives us a single unified presence for all of our cities which will significantly strengthen the global cohesiveness of the Social Media Week community. All forms of relevant content and events can be accessed in one location now, the global schedule page.” said Toby Daniels, Executive Director and Founder of Social Media Week.

In addition to providing this unified global event experience, Event Espresso makes it simple for Social Media Week users to register for multiple events with just a single log-in. Furthermore, now you can click into your “My Events” section of the schedule to track the event that you have favorite’d, registered for, and submitted to host.

Stay tuned for new iterations and updates of the Social Media Week scheduling and registration system throughout 2011 and beyond.

As always, we’d love your feedback on how to make it even better! If you or your company is interested in purchasing the Event Espresso plug-in for your events, visit the Event Espresso website.

In London tonight, all the police cells are full

“In London tonight, all the police cells are full”

BBC TV News

It’s the fourth consecutive night of rioting and there are an unprecedented 16,000 officers on the capital’s streets.

Last night and today law abiding Londoners reacted in the way they know best – with humour.

…and here’s the picture:

The hashtag #LondonRiots starts reporting the ‘news’ that London Zoo had been looted and there’s a tiger loose on genteel North London’s Primrose Hill.

Soon, there’s another rumour of another animal on the loose:

Twitter

Dalston, east London, comes under attack and police can’t respond. Local shop owners defend themselves:

Groups set cars on fire in Camden Town on the first night of breakthrough comedian James Mullinger’s new show, leaving Mullinger to react by stretching irony to its limits:

Those watching from home start to realize that what they’re seeing is brought to them by incredibly brave reporters:

And this viewer thinks it’s time that their names are adjusted to recognize their bravery:

The night wears on and the rioters’ endurance exceeds that of the concerned citizens, who are now thinking about work tomorrow:

The sun rises. A new day. But with the police overwhelmed yesterday, people’s attention naturally turns to what will happen tonight. Can nothing be done?

Rumors spread about riots being planned in other areas of the country.

Shopkeepers have to take a difficult decision. In Manchester, a Subway store owner faces up to reality:

(photo (c): @xsophmayx)

Some stay open, stay defiant.

Blogs are quickly set up to identify – and shame – the looters.

And as law abiding citizens (and BBC reporters) get ready for another night, anxious parents from all over the world are calling to check everyone’s okay:

There have been terrible scenes and feeble justifications for criminal behavior. One man was shot dead. Families have been made homeless. Small and large business have been burnt to the ground.

But all today, ordinary people rallied round the hashtag #riotcleanup with brooms, plastic bags and smiles. There are Twitpics circulating off tables laid neatly with tea and home-baked cakes as refreshments for police officers with some using their riot shields to carry tea out to their colleagues.

Sometimes there seems little to reason to laugh at any of this. But somehow, we’ll find a way to clean house.

Online Identity Series: Who Owns You On the Internet?

TETRRF-00013265-001

Online, we all love to share things, and social media has created great platforms for us to do so.   When I first questioned friends who joined Facebook back in my university years, they always responded, “It’s just so easy to share pictures.”  And sharing is fun, but things can sometimes go awry with what you share because the Internet is a kind of public domain.  It’s a good idea to know your rights regarding your own visage on the internet–or you could end up as the poster child of the next online scam. More after the jump.

Revisiting the Canadian Election: Was #elxn41 a Social Media Election?

fbmapleleaf

It’s been a month since the end of the Canadian election, commonly twittered as #elxn41, and one of the most repeated questions was, “Was this Canadian election a social media election?”  Moreover, what is a social media election, anyways?  Does someone get crowned Twitter King?  More analysis after the break.

Join The Social Media Week Global Editorial Team!

We’ve got big news on all fronts!

We’re excited to announce that the next Social Media Week will be taking place September 19-23 in 12 cities simultaneously. We are continuing to accept city applications and will be announcing the initial line up of cities in the coming weeks.

If you are interested in becoming a host city either in September or in February 2012, please complete an application here.

In other news, in the weeks following Social Media Week 2011, our Global Team has been brainstorming on how to leverage the unprecedented enthusiasm and excitement seen throughout the week to continue to engage participants between conferences.

Over 30,000 physical attendees participated across 9 cities in more than 600 individual sessions graced by over 1800 speakers.  Online, over 80,000 unique visitors watched sessions via livestream and over 180,000 people came through socialmediaweek.org leading up to and during the conference.

Throughout the week, we heard attendees reflect on the role, impact, and potential of social media across industries. Social Media Week was created to inspire and drive these conversations, making it important that they continue even after the conference is over.

To facilitate this, we’re in the process of building out a global media platform that will showcase innovation, news and analysis around what’s happening in social and mobile media across the globe.

We are now actively recruiting a Global Editorial Team to help lead this new endeavor.

We’re asking participants to contribute 2-3 posts a week (in English) that highlight news, analysis, or commentary on social and mobile media developments from their native countries.  In addition to being at the forefront of an unprecedented international initiative, contributors will also receive exposure to our global audience with readers in over 100 countries.

We are looking for thought leaders, innovators, and social media enthusiasts from across the world to participate.

To be considered fill out the form below!

Social Media Week Launches Mobile App to Connect With Others

Social Media Week and global technology partner OpenAction have teamed up to improve the social experience during the 5-day conference.

Networking is going on through the night, but it’s highly likely that you won’t be able to meet and connect with everyone you should.  It was nearly
impossible — until now.  As the old saying goes, “you don’t know who
you don’t know.”

Today we are proud to launch the Social Media Week mobile application. Now you can find others you’d like to connect with based on name, industry, or even the session you are sitting in right now.

John Brennan, co-founder of OpenAction says, “We have been thinking about a mobile application as a next product for a while, and Social Media Week was the perfect venue to kick that off.”

Before the conference, attendees were offered the chance to share their
twitter and linked in urls.  OpenAction uses these two pieces of public
info to build the mobile experience, which by the way, also has a web counterpart.

Mobile application is available to each city:

New York
San Francisco
Hong Kong
Istanbul
London
Paris
Rome
São Paulo
Toronto

For all press and media inquires, please contact John Brennan of OpenAction at johnb@openaction.org.

About OpenAction
OpenAction makes meaningful connections within a community.  As a
social-enterprise, they have spent the last year working with
foundations
, universities, and other socially-driven organizations to
create meaningful connections between people and projects (in over 40
countries).  The platform and visualization can be used to promote
localized events and activity, or it can be used to showcase projects
by linking multiple content sources together (Flickr, Youtube, Blog,
etc.) into a single narrative. Now, OpenAction is expanding
their
efforts to enhance the person-to-person connection.
