One of the best things about living in Glasgow is that there is always something happening. A vibrant and highly social city, its people get together to do stuff, Social Media Week being an excellent example of that, Glasgow for Business Week being another.
One thing that helps with that is beer of course, and I often seem to find myself writing about it. I have said it before, it’s an inherently social thing, and that’s why we have always tried to incorporate it in Social Media Week through events and, this year, by selecting the most excellent WEST St Mungo’s Lager as the official beer of the week.
Now, not every city has a beer brewed within its boundaries named after its patron Saint, but Glasgow does and so it will be no surprise that we also have Glasgow Beer Week. It’s happening from the 7th to the 14th of September – so starting today – and like Social Media Week it’s back for a second year. Our beer partners WEST have brewed a special brew for the week, a light, pale beer in the tradition of the German Rhineland. Other events include a feature on homebrewing, who knows Obama might show up for a few tips having released the recipe for his favourite home brew this week, a special botanic herbal brew being created, and guest beers all over the place.
And of course, as you would expect, they are social. Twitter users will be adding the ‘#gbw12’ hashtag to their tweets to create a real-time news feed that will be posted on the official Beer Week website. The site also features a beer map showing what beer-lovers are drinking around town, based on the check-ins made by users of the beery social media app Untappd (‘Foursquare for beer’ – untappd.com).
