New York Fashion Week has taken the leveraging of social media tools to a whole new level, as reported on Mashable.com. Previously fashion lovers all over the world would wait patiently to get their hands on the next glossy magazine to be released for all the latest must-have styles and looks. However, gone are those dark days: the revolution of social media and new technology has allowed the mere fashionista to be a part of the show as it happens. Live streaming, social networking sites, photo sharing applications and blogs help to deliver the action as it happens.
Julie Fredrickson, co-founder of fashion blogging network Coutorture says “Instead of having a generic, two-paragraph write up, you can now go to any number of sites that cover all kinds of minutiae, from where someone sat to what the runway music was like. Nowadays, if you don’t have video within a couple of hours, you’re considered ‘behind’.”
Social media advances have created innovative platforms for brands to connect with their consumers. Apart from live streams, brands are also producing backstage video and photographic footage, and sharing it with their fans via their websites, their mobile apps and various social platforms. This all helps to generate online excitement and allows fans to feel ‘closer’ to the brand.
During #SMWHK, we hope to learn from this case study to actively engage with both Hong Kong and global audiences to share the latest about our findings as they happen.

A couple of days ago Myspace announced Mashup with Facebook, a new feature that allows Myspace users to easily create a personalised stream of entertainment content. Users can now easily transport their likes and interests from their Facebook profile to their Myspace page with a one-click-set up, allowing news and information from their favourite entertainment sources to be immediately streamed on their Myspace page. Users can also programme their own streams based on trending topics on Myspace and engage with other fans that share the same interests.
A spokesperson from Myspace said “We are thrilled to further our collaboration with Facebook through Mashup with Facebook. This new feature is a great illustration of our strategy around social entertainment and enabling the real-time stream. The stream is one of our most popular features on Myspace, and it is now delivering an even richer entertainment experience of relevant content for our users to enjoy,” said Mike Jones, CEO of Myspace. “I’m particularly excited because so many people will be able to have the immediate satisfaction of enjoying their own entertainment program that they have customized themselves as well as connecting to all their passions and to the Myspace community at large.”
