In just 9 months, Foursquare, the location-based social networking website, has surpassed the 5 million user mark. According to Mashable.com, the website now has more than 10 times the number of users it had back in March of this year.
This may seem like an impressive figure, but when these figures were investigated it was based on Foursquare having more than 5 million user IDs, not actual users. When Mashable.com spoke to Foursquare, they said “Though there are over 5 million user IDs in the foursquare community, our user IDs don’t necessarily match up to our actual number of user accounts.”
Foursquare is one of the most popular geo-social networking sites and has FacebookPlaces hot on its heels trying to compete. According to the report from Mashable.com it was rumoured that Facebook made an acquisition offer for the company and hinted that another party (most likely Yahoo) made a $140 million bid for Foursquare as well.
There is a big difference between active users and sign ups, but do you think Foursquare should sell out to Facebook? What are your thoughts?
