Social Media Making Sweet Sweet Music

SMWHK will be holding a whole range of events across the week, from conversations surrounding China to Fashion, and Twitter 101 to a Mommy blogging roundtable. We also have a couple of music events, such as the alivenotdead.com x TVB.com Music Battles live music event featuring Cantonese hip hop, is picking up A LOT of interest, sounds good, right?!

In lieu of these events, this article on mashable.com takes a look at YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and shows how technology and music can be combined to connect people all over the world.  Ed Sanders, YouTube’s Group Marketing Manager said, “If you have the skill and a webcam, you should be able to give it a crack!”

The idea of the competition is to open classical music up to a new community, younger and casual listeners and to unite people around a common passion. You can check out the videos here that feature a Harpist from Russia, Trumpet player from Portugal, Electric Guitar player from Brazil and even Trombones, Horns and Percussion players from all over the world!

Social Media For Greater Good: How A Viral Video Changed One Man’s Life.

There’s no hiding from this video, and soon there will be no hiding from this man! In lieu of SMW HK being themed ‘For Love or Money,’ this story is an amazing example of the power of social media for love and greater social good, and it’s so darn heart warming at the same time.

In just two days, a homeless man from Columbus, Ohio has had his life transformed thanks to a video posted on YouTube by Doral Chenoweth, a videographer for the Columbus Dispatch website. The video has already received over 4 million views and racked up over 20,000 comments.

The video features Ted Williams, a homeless man, with an exceptional ‘entertainment’  voice. He is usually found on the streets of Ohio with the occasional person offering him a dollar in exchange for hearing him speak.

Since this video has been posted on YouTube, Ted Williams has been inundated with requests and bookings and has even had propositions from the NFL and the Cleveland Cavaliers for announcer work.

This just goes to show the effects of social media and how it can be used for love, and for the greater good.

The Power Of Social Media In Response To Donald Tsang Christmas Rap

Hong Kongers received an alternative Christmas greeting this year from Chief Executive Donald Tsang, as he sent his Christmas well wishes by rapping along with US-born artist MC Jin. Within just 24 hours, the rap video had spread like wildfire over Facebook and YouTube, with the video receiving over 200,000 views 4,600 dislikes, and ‘hate’ groups on Facebook being created in protest of the rap.

This is a strong case showing the power of social media and how quickly people respond to certain issues they feel strongly about. MarketingInteractive.com reports that ‘some viewers said it was a brave move, while others said it was desperate or even a waste of time and money.’
