About
Social Media Week 2012
“Social media is changing the way we live and work, be part of that change”
Collaborate, Connect, Contribute
Behind the hype, the ‘social’ in social media is having an enormous impact on day-to-day life. It’s not just about tracking friends on Facebook, businesses are using social media to connect with their customers, passionate individuals are using it to influence policy, creators are sharing their content with a global market space.
Now in its fourth year, the Spring series of Social Media Week (13 – 17th Feb) will take place simultaneously across cities around the world including, providing a truly global perspective.
We love conferences but felt there could be a much better way of enabling conversation and collaboration than traditional conferences allow. We want to put the ‘social’ back into social media!
This unique take on the traditional format creates a rich, interactive and beneficial set of experiences for everyone who participates whether attending an event, speaking, joining a panel, volunteering or supporting the events as a sponsor.
Unlike many events we aim for access to events programming and content to be as open as possible, and the events are almost exclusively free to attend, thanks to the generous support from our sponsors.
Social Media Week London
Led by Chinwag, last year’s event included over 110 events, 12 designed by Chinwag and a whopping 95 created and delivered with love by our 54 event partners including Dell, Dutch Embassy, British Library, BBC, Channel 4, LikeMinds, Viadeo, We Are Social, techMAP, Ogilvy and more.
44% of events were put on by digital, traditional and social media agencies, the rest were a variety of companies, organisations and individuals from all sectors.
8,500 tickets were snapped up and over 8,500 online viewers watched livestreams. Social Media Week London (#smwldn) trended every day on Twitter surfing the wave of tweets across all the events.
The topics covered ranged across a large selection of industries from music, games, mobile, public sector, broadcast, charity, museums & galleries, sport, radio, business, recruitment, journalism and theatre.
The response to the event was overwhelmingly positive with many of the events over-subscribed. We came away inspired and determined to make Social Media Week London 2012 even better!

The sheer diversity of events throughout the week brings to life the idea of collaborating, connecting and contributing, whether presenting at a session, a treasure hunt, asking questions at a panel, engaging in a tweet-up or networking.
