Social Media Week London Brainstorm: Ideas & Inspiration for 2012

BRAIN HUE Collection by Emilio Garcia

Two heads are better than one. So, 35 must be exponentially better, right?

At Chinwag, we’re big fans of building things collaboratively, so we thought we’d really push the boat out for the initial planning of Social Media Week London 2012 (SMWLDN), 13-17th Feb, in case you’re wondering.

On Tuesday evening, after an open invite, 35 people gathered at Ketchum PR‘s offices in Shoreditch to ruminate, dream and scheme on the themes for next year’s SMWLDN. Analysing last year’s event and taking informal soundings, the group started to explore five starting points:

  1. Business & Marketing
  2. Consumer: Music, Fashion, Sport, Food, Family
  3. Social For Good
  4. Technology
  5. B2B / Internal Comms

The aim was to end up with lots of scribblings that would help us as a group to:

  • explore themes, test the words, meanings of the subjects
  • Brainstorm topics and ideas for events, whether general or specific
  • Identify the audience, their interest and level of knowledge

Lauren painstakingly photographed and uploaded all of the flipcharts and uploaded them to Flickr and Facebook for your delectation…hope they’re useful in inspiring events and collaborations:

The aim of the evening was to generate ideas and hopefully create some inspiration. If some events came out of it directly, all the better. As it turned out there were lots of post-brainstorming chats between people looking to collaborate which was marvellous.

For me, it highlighted just how powerful a room full of smart, enthusiatic people can be. With so many events, they’re only as good as the audience, for this brainstorm it couldn’t have been more true. Seeing people from diverse backgrounds talk passionately about their pet topics, competitors collaborating and ideas collaboratively built was inspiring. I just wish we had enough time to run put in place a fraction of the ideas that came up.

Which is where you come in…have a look through the flipcharts above and check out the Get Involved section of the Social Media Week London website to find out more. We’ll publish notes on running events during the week in the next couple of days if you fancy running your own session as well as publishing dates/times of office hours when we’ll have bookable slots to chat through events in more detail.

It’s can be much more fun (and easier!) working on events with groups of friends and colleagues, so it’s worth reaching out using #smwldn on Twitter, or the SMWLDN Facebook page if you’re looking for collaborators.

For what it’s worth, here’s a couple of my favourites – feel free to add yours or variations in the comments below:

  • ‘Pimp Yo Social Profile’ – how to pimp your social media profile
  • Learning Zone/Social Media 101 – a series of short sessions designed to help intro the wonders (and pitfalls) of getting social online
  • Social Media Sports Day – possibly real, possibly virtual – my take: a tweet-powered race around the Olympic stadium (a guy can dream!)
  • Public Form UX Hackathon – take the dullest, error-prone, difficult forms and apply the best UX minds to stream-line and improve everyone’s experience – think doctors, council forms, etc.

The experiment worked well, so we’re thinking about using this format again to further explore the consumer side of social media, tackling: sports, music, fashion, food, gaming and families. Keep your eyes peeled, we should have news up in the next couple of days about this event.

With 14 events already published, SMWLDN 2012 looks like it’s going to be a fantastic year. We’re already (arguably over) excited. Feel free to drop us a line, but do bear in mind we’re standing underneath a waterfall of email, so bear with us if it takes a little while to respond.

Thanks to Kate Matlock, Tom Cornish and Alastair Sibley for being our generous hosts at Ketchum Pleon and props to Jemima Gibbons, Charlotte Beckett, Kate Matlock, Claire Robinson, Kathryn Corrick and Charlie Lyons for capturing the brain waves on paper.

Preparations Begin for Social Media Week London 2012 #smwldn – Get Involved

SMWLDN

Earlier this year in February, led by Chinwag, Social Media Week London included over 110 events, 12 designed by Chinwag and a whopping 95 created and delivered with love by our 54 event partners, including Dell, Dutch Embassy, British Library, BBC, Channel 4, LikeMinds, Viadeo, We Are Social, techMAP, Ogilvy and more.

44% of events were put on by digital, traditional and social media agencies, the rest were a variety of companies, organisations and individuals from all sectors.

8,500 tickets were snapped up and over 8,500 online viewers watched livestreams. Social Media Week London (#smwldn) trended every day on Twitter surfing the wave of tweets across all the events.

It’s almost that time of year again – and we’re back taking the lead for Social Media Week London, 13 – 17th February 2012.

Social Media Week provides a unique take on the traditional ‘conference’ format and creates a rich, interactive and beneficial set of experiences for everyone who participates whether attending an event, speaking, joining a panel, volunteering or supporting the events as a sponsor.

Social Media Week Brainstorm (Tues 22nd Nov)

To kick start Social Media Week London in the most inclusive and collaborative way possible, we’d love to invite you to join us for a Brainstorm on Tuesday 22nd November.

Yes, that is this coming Tuesday, apologies for the late notice, but even if you can drop in for 20mins to share your pearls of wisdom, it would be much appreciated.

We’ll be discussing themes, hubs, topics and events – so get your thinking caps on and come along to share your golden drops of knowledge. Make sure you RSVP so we can ensure there are enough chairs & snacks!

Launch: #nokiaconnects Social Media Week Across The Globe

NOKIA, global and headline City sponsors for Social Media Week London, have teamed up with the organisers to create a way for attendees in all nine Social Media Week cities to participate in the global conversation on Twitter and track individual event check-ins on Foursquare.

The first iteration of the project will be delivered via #NokiaConnects, a web and mobile application that tracks every tweet and check-in that takes place during and after the February conference. Users will be able to all the Twitter conversation and foursquare activity on a global level and then drill down to a specific city and even an individual event. Through Nokia’s mapping API, users will also be able to see where people are checking in throughout each participating city.

The #NokiaConnects application specific to Social Media Week London can be accessed by visiting http://socialmediaweek.org/nokiaconnects/london.

#nokiaconnects London Screenshot

“We have wanted to build this app since we first expanded to a multi-city model,” said Social Media Week’s Founder and Executive Director, Toby Daniels.  “We monitor Twitter conversations and foursquare check-ins very closely before and during the conference and due to the distributed, multi-city experience and how hyper-social our attendees are, the amount of activity is very high.”

The application that launches this week is the first phase of a longer-term project that Social Media Week is partnering on with global sponsor Nokia throughout 2011.  The broader vision ties into Social Media Week’s overall theme for 2011, which explores how local and regional societies, cultures, and economies are becoming more integrated & empowered through social and mobile communications.

“Nokia is extremely proud to be partnering with Social Media Week and providing the technology solutions that power the #NokiaConnects solution,” said Craig Hepburn, Global Director of Digital at Nokia and Social Media Week Global Advisory Board member.  “It was our joint vision to provide an application to better connect the global conversations while allowing attendees to map out and check in to their local events.  Connecting people around the world by allowing them to share their experiences from their mobile or web browser empowers them to communicate in real time.  We believe the nature of the event and the solutions provided will create one of the most innovative and exciting events of the year.”

For all press and media inquires, please contact Ben Scheim of Crowdcentric/Social Media Week at ben@crowdcentric.net.

Q&A with Tom Smith, CEO, GlobalWebIndex

GlobalWebIndex are generously sponsoring Social Media Week.

Tom Smith - TrendstreamWe spoke with Tom Smith, CEO of GlobalWebIndex, an online tool populated with the most detailed set of research data for marketers helping them understand target audience, business category and market trends wherever they are in the world. Tom is speaking at Apps Go Social and Measuring Social Media and took a few minutes out to share his perspective on social media.

Q: Tell us about your background with Global Web Index and what the organisation’s major goals are for 2011.

I founded the GlobalWebIndex research project back in 2009, to provide agencies and marketing focused organisations, with clear and quantifiable global data on the evolution of consumer internet adoption, attitudes and motivations. Basically to cut through the hype. Our major goals in 2011, are to expand our current client base, expand the scope of the research to over 30 markets and of course help define the direction of internet trends. We are also making a major push this year to redefine how we distribute our research to clients, making data far more accessible.

Q: When and why did Global Web Index first get involved with Social Media Week?

We got involved last week, primarily because it’s a global platform, which fits our focus. This year we’re looking at London, as we’re based here, but next year we would like to expand that. We are very focused on social media in our research, so that makes sense. We also liked the nature of the event, which is more distributed and less like conventional events.

Q: What is a major trend you see rising in the Social Media space?

We’ve talked alot about changing evolution of social media, which thanks to “real-time” platforms like Twitter, is now far more about sharing and reacting, rather than publishing and creating. Blogs and forums are in decline, micro-blogs and social networks are on the rise. Peoples social contribution is much smaller and the focus of social media has changed.

Q: What platforms are you really excited about?

We love Tumblr in the office, great for a more casual form of publishing. Longer term, we’re excited about the prospects of Youview, which integrates internet services and social technologies with traditional TV content. Will be really interesting to see how that works out.

Q: What are you looking forward to the most during Social Media Week 2011?

All the events look interesting, it’s just finding the time to get around

Q: Where do you see the future of Social Media?

The integration of social technologies with the distribution platforms of traditional media, is really exciting. Magazine or newspaper apps on tablets or TV programming and films distributed via internet connection TVs, will increasingly be integrated with social technologies. This means your network, or people like you will increasingly define all content you consume, and extending the reach of social media out of the browser.

GlobalWebIndexGlobalWebIndex are sponsoring Apps Go Social on Monday 7th Feb, 12-2pm.

The apps market is going from strength to strength, with brands dominating the space, the next generation of apps are increasingly becoming more social integrating; checkin’s, likes and recommendation engines to add extra value to the user, any time any where.

Social Media Week London: Updated Event List (With Spaces)

We’ve put together this handy list of all the events, sessions, gatherings and networking events that still have capacity. This is by no means the whole list, which you can see on the Social Media Week London schedule.

So without further a-do, for your delectation:

Social Media Week London – Latest List of Events

When we started this shenanigans, we estimated there’d be a maximum of 70 events with about 5,000 people attending. And we’d probably had a drink and were feeling ambitious at the time.

Yesterday, we breezed past the 5,000 RSVP mark for registrations at events across the week and the number of events (and believe us, it’s tricky keeping track) passed the 80 mark. It’s going to be a busy week.

We’ve had some feedback on Twitter from people paging through the schedule and finding events are already full, so one of our volunteers (thanks Anne) went through the whole list to find all of the events that still have space available.

Peruse the list below and click on the links for further info. If you’re going to come along, please do RSVP to give the event organisers an idea on numbers. Any questions, contact us via @smwldn.
