Orli,
Thank you for the advice, everything you said is really helpful and insightful. After going to all the great events at SMWNY I truly feel like this is only the beginning, and the impact of digital marketing and social media is going to increase dramatically over the next few years.

My other question: Once a new brand has established an ecommerce store which is more important to invest in building a large fan following or hiring a blogger?

That's a great question Marla. I think that there is huge opportunity for a small brand to succeed in social. Even a few existing fans/customers can become brand advocates for you. What starts as 5 or 6 followers on Twitter can easily turn into 50, and then 500, if you have a great product and compelling message. Turning those into sales is a bigger challenge... but in time, sales will result from growing your fan base. Investing in your social media presence is a great idea, but it can be a challenge for small business. The great thing about social is that for small brands it's easy enough to dip your toe in the water, experiment, and see what sticks! Good luck...

Orli, Thank you for the summary, at times it was hard to hear everything the panelist were saying.

I have a follow up question to the event last night. What is your advice for a small brand trying to connect with consumers via social media? Many of the normal routes such as facebook and twitter seem almost impossible to break into and get noticed. Do you think it is best for a new brand to invest in outside help with marketing via social media?
