Social Media Week is a leading news platform and worldwide conference that curates and shares the best ideas and insights into social media and technology's impact on business, society, and culture.

What do Jessica Scorpio, Jill Becker and Julia Hartz have in common? Besides having a name that starts with “J”, these women represent a rising force in the ascension of new entrepreneurs.

There is no doubt that women are bringing something good to the table…and it’s not dinner. From everyday women to high profile CEOs, 2013 is the year of the Woman Entrepreneur. An iconic businessman and shrewd investor, Warren Buffett is making is making his next bet on women.

In an essay for Fortune Magazine, Buffett explains why women hold the key to unlocking a new era of prosperity. He asserts, “too many women continue to impose limitations on themselves, talking themselves out of achieving their potential.”

To combat this mentality, he urges women to de-fog their lens and “you will see a woman who is a match for anyone, male or female.”

Buffett’s confidence in women is not unfounded:

+ 10.1 million firms are owned by women (50% or more), employing more than 13 million people, and generating $1.9 trillion in sales as of 2008.

1 in 5 with revenue of $1 million or more is woman-owned.

Not excited yet? Optimism is contagious and women have a lot of it:

+ 81% of women are optimistic about their business’ overall performance in 2013

+ 85% predict more women will start their own business in 2013

(Data gathered from: National Association of Women Business Owners)

In a survey of 500 NAWBO members, the most important traits for running a successful business were:

+ Passion for an idea

+ Vision to succeed long-term after the business is launched

+ Willingness and attitude to fail before you succeed and to take risk

On a global level, there has been a 60% surge in entrepreneurialism in the Latin American sphere. The National Woman’s Business Council reports that there are currently 787,914 Hispanic women-owned businesses in the United States, accounting for an astonishing 45.7% increase in number since 2002 and a 133.3% increase since 1997.

Buffett puts this into perspective: “We’ve seen what can be accomplished when we use 50% of our human capacity. If you visualize what 100% can do, you’ll join me as an unbridled optimist about America’s future”

In line with our theme of building a more Open & Connected World, achieving 50/50 representation in all of our cities is the next step in fulfilling our mission “to capture, curate and share the most meaningful ideas, trends, and best practices with regard to technology and social media’s impact on business, society and culture.”
