Instagram Announces New Algorithm Format That’s Just Like Facebook’s News Feed

Instagram posted on their official blog that the average Instagram user misses 70 percent of what’s in their feed, and to “help solve” this problem, they’re introducing a new way to show you photos and videos.

As the blog post explains, “Instagram has grown, and it’s become harder to keep up with all the photos and videos people share. This means you often don’t see the posts you might care about the most. To improve your experience, your feed will soon be ordered to show the moments we believe you will care about the most.”

According to New York Times sources, testing of the algorithm will begin slowly, working closely with “a single-digit percentage of user groups before deciding whether to introduce the changes broadly.”

In the announcement, Instagram vows to remain attentive to the user feedback received and also claimed that users can expect to see the algorithm “in the coming months.”

This is essentially how Facebook decides what to show in your News Feed, and something that Twitter is trying to replicate as well. Let’s say you “Like” 70% of your best friend’s Instagram photos, the highest percentage among anyone else you follow. If he or she posts in the morning, and you don’t check Instagram until late at night, the new Instagram feed will make sure you see your best friend’s photo as soon as you sign in.

If you post regularly on Instagram, either for personal or professional use, you now have to focus much more on content your followers will want to like or comment on, rather than primarily rely on the frequency of your posts or taking advantage of real-time posting in response to news and events.
