Below are some of the takeaways from the session. To watch the entire talk of “Stop Being Socially Awkward” plus access more than 100 hours of other SMW events and presentations, sign up for SMW Insider.
Peterson started the talk by answering the question “How do you create content that is engaging for the users?” He states that “social media is a medium that talks with you.” He uses the analogy that “social media is a party, but most brands show up to a party and act weird. People forget social media is social.”
Russett explained that people are stuck in the traditional billboard view of advertising – some advertisers are afraid of the comment section. It’s important for brands to respond to both negative comments and the positive comments. “People will tell you when they hate something and people will tell you when they love something- it’s the power of social media”
Mota continued the conversation with talking about the budget and what kind of money to spend in the social media world. He talked about how you really don’t need to spend a lot of money to have good content. He states, “Don’t ever think that more money gets you a better piece of creative – understand the platform.”
Jason said, “when you’re making content for social media, it’s important to ask these two questions: 1) Why are you making it? and 2) Do you like it yourself?”
