Slack Announces Video Calling for Groups and 1-to-1 Chats
Chatting with co-workers on Slack just became much easier thanks to the introduction of a video calling feature. Slack users will now be able to make 1-to-1 and group video calls all within the Slack app.
If your team uses Slack to communicate throughout the day, share files with each other, or connect to the plethora of third-party integrations, chatting and collaborating just got easier.
Slack announced that video calling for groups and 1-to-1 individuals is now available. To access it, you’d go to the same phone icon previously limited to voice calls at the top of your Slack window.
Video calling will also include emoji responses. For example, instead of unmuting yourself and trying to jump in at the perfect moment, you can send the ✋ emoji to let your team know that you have a question, or just send ? to show your approval on something. Emoji reactions will appear briefly over your video and play a subtle sound.
Slack is even allowing users to keep their favorite video calling app as the default service via the phone icon, so if your team prefers Google Hangouts or other video conferencing tools, it won’t be troublesome to. Learn more about how to set that up here.
One feature not yet fully integrated into Slack is screen-sharing, but since Slack acquired a company called Screenhero in early 2015, we expect them to add the feature soon. While video calling is terrific for face-to-face communications, a screen-sharing service would certainly add to Slack’s productivity and collaboration tool belt.
Just a few months ago, Slack surpassed 1.25 million paid users and 4 million daily active users, with more than half of Slack’s 4 million daily active users (DAU) living and working outside of North America.
