After Tesla Introduced Autopilot, Crash Rate Reduced 40%
Elon Musk weighed in on twitter about the recent news too.
Autosteer is the main feature of Tesla’s Autopilot system, enabling the cars to steer itself, and after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) closed its investigation of a fatal accident involving Tesla Autopilot (the investigation concluded the car and technology was not at fault), and in the report, information states Tesla’s crash rate was reduced by 40% after introduction of Autopilot (full NHTSA report).
According to electrek, there were 1.3 crashes per million miles before Autosteer, and after it dropped to 0.8 crashes per million miles.

NHTSA tells to drivers to “read all instructions and warnings” before using any form of driver assist systems. As sad as the accident was, let’s hope technology, and especially the people who use it, continue to get better and save more lives around the world.
