American director and film icon, Martin Scorsese, and legendary actor Robert De Niro, are the latest stars to join Netflix’s roster of impressive talent creating shows and movies for the new-age entertainment and media company.

The two will collaborate on “The Irishman”, a film based on the novel “I Heard You Paint Houses” which marks the ninth time Scorsese and De Niro are collaborating together.

Netflix owns the global rights to the movie, and production is expected to begin later this year.

Why this matters

Well, if Netflix wants to compete with Amazon and the more traditional media companies in prestige and future awards shows, they’ll need a critically acclaimed hit under their belt.

This is something Amazon gained with “Manchester by the Sea” as WIRED writes. Amazon Studios’ “Manchester by the Sea” became the first movie from a streaming service to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. It also received six Oscar nods, essentially validating Amazon’s role in the entertainment world.
