At the end of 2016, Instagram had 300 million monthly active users (MAUs)… Today, Instagram has 700 million, and it shows no signs of stopping.

According to Recode, “Instagram’s latest 100 million new users joined the platform in just over four months, which was faster than the six months it took the company to jump from 500 million to 600 million users, which was faster than the nine months it took to jump from 400 million to 500 million.”

Instagram’s Community Lead at #SMWLDN (2016)

David Cuen, International Lead of Community Team, discussed Instagram’s core values and how they inspire key company decisions last September at Social Media Week in London. David explained why 1. Community comes first, 2. Inspiration and creativity, and 3. Simplicity are his team’s three pillars.

“This is a place where you can find your passion. If your into baking, there are baking accounts. If you’re into skating, there’s a skating world. There are a lot of sub-communities and interests.”

Cuen also emphasized the importance of observing how the community responds to their platform. Instagram noticed the emerging trend of video content and gave their users the tools for it. “We’ve seen an increase of 150% on video production and consumption. People are using video more and more.”

With the community as the center, Instagram is able to effectively create a positive user experience across the globe.
