Facebook is marching further into the music video domain — this time, by building a standalone, karaoke-like app, called Lasso, according to a report by TechCrunch. It’s seen as an act to win over users of TikTok, the lip sync app that has been sensationally popular among teenage users, which reportedly has around 100 million active users.

The news comes after Facebook’s move to launch Lip Sync Live in June, a feature that allows users to lip sync to songs and broadcast videos of themselves live. The feature was made possible after Facebook’s deals with major record labels, enabling users to add soundtracks from famous singers like Cardi B, Drake, Bruno Mar, etc., which is why Instagram Stories recently have started to look and sound more

And just earlier this week, Facebook rolled out even more music features, like allowing users to add music stickers to their Facebook stories — the same way you do in Instagram. An on-screen lyric display is also now enabled at Lip Sync Live. was merged this year with TikTok, its sister app operated worldwide after it was purchased by China’s tech company ByteDance for one billion dollars. With its currently 500 million users on TikTok, according to South China Morning Post,’s join will only make the app more viral.

So Facebook is now on a mission to earn back its teen users by pulling all these features into an app named Lasso. According to the report, Facebook has had its eyes on since as early as 2016, and now, the team that’s developing Lasso is being led by Facebook’s principal lead product designer Brady Voss.

With young, loyal fans of and TikTok that already have been using the app for years, Facebook needs to come up with an app that’s trendy and creative enough to not disappoint its users.
