I think it’s time that you put your phone down, cease negotiations with whichever jumped-up influencer you’re wrangling for your latest campaign, pull back on your paid social advertising and finally admit to yourself that the invention of social media has been a giant f*cking travesty.
I get it, how would we have ever known? In early days it had so much promise; people were much nicer back then. Comments on posts were entirely positive and trolls limited themselves to tormenting people on YouTube only.
And then, somewhere around 2015 everything changed, I think it was the release of the front facing camera, or Chrissy Teigen’s cry face meme, Pizza Rat or the f*cking debate as to whether the dress was blue or gold (it was gold). Whatever it was, social media has been in steady decline since then and now that it’s 2019, things are really really shitty and we at Social Media Week have had enough.
This is why in 2020, our global theme will be “Hindsight,” which will be a look back at how terrible social media has been for society and the ways that it will continue to plague our lives well into the future.
