Staying Informed Through Humor: The Role of Satirical News Programs in Keeping Up With Politics

4:15 PM - 4:45 PM

Hosted by The Onion

Main Stage 2 - The Merchandise Mart 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza Chicago Illinois 60654

Americans are now turning to satirical programs for news about government and politics. A 2014 study from Pew Research Center, for example, showed that 12% of online American adults got political news from the Daily Show and 10% from The Colbert Report in the previous week, numbers that rival many traditional news outlets. The Pew Research Center’s Jeff Gottfried will share research on the role these satirical programs play in how people keep up with their political world. He will discuss the extent to which Americans are aware of, trust, and consume these sources; what characteristics define these sources’ audiences; why people get news there; and finally, the impact these programs can have in informing the public about political issues.
