Masterclass: The Ethics of Open Data
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Hosted by Jasculca Terman Strategic Communications
Masterclass Room 1 - The Merchandise Mart 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza Chicago Illinois 60654
With increasing scrutiny on government entities (especially here in Illinois), constituents are demanding their politicians be transparent across all aspects of governing and operations. As a result, there’s been a rapid growth in the field of open data, which is not only helpful to constituents, but also to the political and investigative news media as well. But just how reliable is open data? Can reporters trust it at face value? Hear from the founders of DataMade (which built IllinoisSunshine.org with the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform) and Aldertrack (which tracks the activity and data related to happening of Chicago’s City Council), and hear from Sun-Times reporter Dan Mihalopolous about how he uses that data in his reporting.
