This talk introduces hitchBOT, a performative and participatory arts and science project. It’s co-creators – David Harris Smith (McMaster University, Canada) and Frauke Zeller (Ryerson University, Canada) – will talk about its conception, development and successful implementation, that is its journey from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Victoria, British Victoria, in July/August 2014. The talk will include a presentation of the broad media coverage hitchBOT gained, both nationally and internationally, and some insights into the media strategy behind it. This also includes some preliminary results from hitchBOT’s social media activities, that spanned more than 35000 followers on Twitter and 48000 Likes on Facebook, and 12000 followers on Instagram.
