The Excitement is Palpable as #SMWLagos Kicks Off Its 5th Year Anniversary

Yes! We’re finally here & Social Media Week Lagos is turning up with a bang at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
To herald the #Next5Years, we’re taking a look at “The [new] Language of Technology: The Future of Communication in Africa,” and exploring how technology is creating a “new language” and way of communicating as well as what this means for the future of communication in Africa.
I and Adeola Alokolaro chatted with attendees to find out what they are excited about and what they look forward to for the next 5 years.
Olorunfemi Obasa, Founder of ChatClass.NG says he is excited about new opportunities, what people are doing with technology and the possibilities of collaborating with them.
“I’m so excited about Social Media Week,” says ST HUB Limited CEO Stephanie Obi cheerfully as she prepares to speak at her event. She looks forward to meeting and interacting with people shaping the online space.
Online Media Enthusiast Mayowa Adeniran, is looking forward to seeing what is new in the social media atmosphere and how it has evolved to using the channels for business and social issues. He also feels it would be great to move social media to the grassroots. He is particularly interested in using open data to improve governance.
Kunle Oni, of Dominos Pizza, wants to see where media is going as well as hear from thought leaders. He is particularly interested in what Troyka, Facebook and Samsung are doing at Social Media Week Lagos.
“I am excited about the way technology has changed business and marketing,” says Agbons Igiewe, General Manager at Ziza Digital. In her words, “Social Media Week Lagos gives us the opportunity to come together, review what’s happening in the industry and chart ways to move further and do great things.”
On the next 5 years she says “If you are doing marketing the old way, you would be out of business in a couple of years because social media is the new word of mouth, Google is the new encyclopedia and your website URL is your new office address.” In other words, social media and digital will play a more dominant role in determining the future of businesses.
