Social Media Week

A huge part of Day 3 of the Social Media Week Conference Lagos was dedicated to women, their exploits in the tech world, and ways of having more women in the tech field.

To underscore the importance of promoting technology among women, reputable organisations like Purple, She Leads Africa, BBC World Service, Paradigm Initiative Nigeria and Dangote Foundation hosted events geared towards advancing the participation of young women in tech development.

Purple, through the Purple Academy and Purple Social Network intimated the audience on its efforts to get more women in the digital space by providing free online courses on their website, and encouraging women engagement on its social media platforms. They constituted a high powered panel of women leaders to speak to young women, particularly budding techies about how to leverage the power of social media to boost their business. Purple wrapped up an event filled day with the African Women In Tech Luncheon.

The session, “Women in Digital – How To Stand Out in the Crowd” hosted by BBC provided an expose on how women can break into digital journalism. BBC Africa presenter, Anne Soy urged women to discover what they are passionate and proceed to pursue it with vigor in order to stand themselves out. Panelists at the event highlighted passion, confidence, attitude and an ability to carry out research as attributes required to succeed as a digital journalist.

She Leads Africa hosted the Tech Women Alley. The event was also supported by Dangote Group. Executive Director, Dangote Industries Ltd, Halima Dangote gave an inspiring speech about the vital role women play in the tech and the society in general and urged women to continue to give their best in their various fields.  Leading women in tech got to display and demonstrate the use of their products on stage. All in all it was an unforgettable day for women, as many of them agreed that they picked many valuable tips on how to pursue a career in tech and forge their path in a male dominated field.
