Nigerian women are significantly under-represented online. Less than 40% of Nigerian Internet users are female. This means that most women are missing out on the myriad advantages of being a ‘Connected African’.
Connected African: Empowering Girls With Tech is a masterclass panel featuring experts in technology and gender issues discussing tactics for improving gender representation online. The online offerings from Purple (Purple Academy and the Purple Social Network) will also be used as a case study to determine what needs to be done to make the online space more female-friendly.
Key Talking Points
- The main factors that keep women offline and challenges for women navigating this space as either experts or users.
- The strategies used to increase female presence online (including input by speakers on how to increase female participation based on their experiences).
- Stories of how Purple’s digital presence has led to real changes for young people and how this can be amplified.
This masterclass is hosted by Purple – a movement for a 50:50 world that seeks to help young women and men reach their full potential and create a better society for everyone. Purple challenges negative attitudes around what women and men can and can’t do, and aims to give everyone the skills they need to succeed, regardless of gender.
