Defending Citizens' Rights Online
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM
Hosted by Paradigm Initiative Nigeria
Experience Stage Powered by Purple Water Corporation Road - Plot 5B VI Lagos
The rights we enjoy online have opened up new prospects and expand the boundaries of opportunities in our world. An attempt to limit those rights will inadvertently limit the opportunities and prospects that the online space offers us. The event will awaken the consciousness of participants on need to be the watch(wo)men of the Nigerian digital space, as we can’t afford to leave the huge task with few activists and advocates.
Defending Citizens Online Rights is targeted at citizens, especially those who are active in the online space either doing business, studying or just engaging in social conversation and participating in political discourse. The event will provide a background to online rights issues in Nigeria and review several happening in the past years in the context of online rights violations and discuss how Nigerians have been hoodwinked into giving up our rights for security.
The Issues to be reviewed include:
- Privacy vis-a-vis Mass surveillance technology, NCC Lawful Interception of Communication, NIN, BVN, SIM card Registration et al
- Freedom of Speech vis-a-vis Cybercrime law and clampdown on bloggers, Social Media Bill by the Senate)
Digital Rights and Freedom Bill by the NetRightsNG coalition
