Ancient pyramids in Egypt? Beaches in Zanzibar? Treks through the Namib desert? Dream it and you can see it. Check any travel blog or tweets from online travel agencies, and you’ll see images that inspire fantasies and awaken curiosity. Social media has opened up a new world of on-demand discovery for travellers and non-travellers alike.

What can travel do for me and my business?

People have been travelling for centuries looking for greener pastures, why can’t you? The 21st century has turned the world into a global village, where you can be anywhere and discover new places in Africa by just taking out your phone and doing a search. This has increasingly become a walk in the park as new memories are made and shared on the web through social media.

People love to share their most interesting experiences with those around them; they write, photograph and tell their friends about their adventures. In recent times, such practices have moved to the mobile web with more and more people sharing their travel experiences on social media.

They open up worlds previously unknown to people across the world. This has inspired others to travel and build memories far from home, and in the process, put Africa in the spotlight for foreign investment. Many entrepreneurs have found their business partners and potential markets through social media.

How can I reach new customers and clients in Africa?

With over 1 billion people in Africa covering 30 million square kilometres, there are a lot of people in dire need of your product or service, who never have access to you. These people may not gather at your website or even notice a campaign you’re running, but what they do notice, is the passing picture on their friend’s profile page, the event notification on their smartphones or a status update that tells them where their loved ones are gathering for lunch.

This event will show participants how to tap into the immense network that social media provides to reach millions of potential customers and clients in Africa.

Where do we begin?

For those new to social media, it can be quite daunting to establish a business presence, gather followers and understand all the social media tools and resources available out there. This event will give participants a breakdown of the steps and the resources that are required to build a brand online, and new and established entrepreneurs will be taught ways to enhance their businesses through social media. After which, more information will be given about how to expand your business to other territories in Africa.

Defying Space and Time aims to address how people are sharing their memories, experiences and adventures through social media, how this has helped to draw worldwide attention to Africa and consequently the contribution this has had to the development of a more connected Africa.

This event targets social media enthusiasts, travellers and entrepreneurs who are interested in sharing their vast experiences with Africans around the world. After the event, you will better understand how social media has improved tourism and investment in Africa, and how you can use social media to grow your brand online.
