Good health is the fundamental right of every individual.
With the rise in the number of illnesses and diseases, from Malaria to Hypertension, Sickle Cell Disorder to Cancer and most recently the Ebola Virus, medical personnel are becoming overwhelmed and overburdened with the increase in the number of patients. However, most of these illnesses and diseases can be preventive where adequate information and awareness is made available.
Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative SAMI, seeks to look beyond the curative factors in health care and take a look at the place of social media in preventive healthcare- not just in basic preventive health care, but in personal healthcare and living healthier lifestyles.
Studies have shown an increase in the number of people sharing their medical experiences online. Be it giving exercise tips, healthy eating habits, preventive or curative tip, the use Social media peer groups, blogs, YouTube, Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn etc is shown to enhance healthcare and healthy living especially in more developed countries. Moreover, with regards to patient compliance to medication and medical instructions, previous studies have shown that peer support and social groups can be useful for improving compliance
Governments across the world are now taking a look at their healthcare structures in a bid to extend healthcare benefits to as many citizens as possible. In a connected upwardly mobile Africa, there is need to therefore look beyond the rudimentary ways of passing information to a socially mobile connected and healthy state.
