The Women’s Film Club is a platform that aims to make independent cinema accessible to the Nigerian public. Through a curated program of film screenings, forum discussions, and related exhibitions, The Women’s Film Club explores the role and participation of women in film, as well as the relevance of contemporary filmmaking to an African and global audience. The Women’s Film Club organises monthly screenings of independent films in Lagos not otherwise shown in mainstream cinemas, and well as special projects that include retrospectives and art exhibitions relating to filmmaking and audiovisual works. By creating an educational platform that situates independent cinema in a critical discourse, The Women’s Club opens a dialogue to examine the social, cultural, and political issues raised in international cinema today.
The Women’s Film Club presents Hyènes, the story of Linguere Ramatou, an aging, wealthy woman who revisits her home village of Colobane. Linguere offers a disturbing proposition to the people of Colobane and lavishes luxuries upon them to persuade them. This embittered woman, “as rich as the World Bank”, will bestow upon Colobane a fortune in exchange for the murder of Dramaan Drameh, a local shopkeeper who abandoned her after a love affair and her illegitimate pregnancy when she was 16.
