Ever since BBM was connected to the London riots in 2011, social media has been getting bad press. Never more so than now, as the death toll rises, has the channel of our future been highlighted as an unsafe, abusive environment in which trolls and bullies thrive.
What you hear about much less often is how social media can be used to make good things happen. Let’s change this at Social Media Week London 2013.
We will be hosting All about the Cause, an initiative to solve a problem/resolve an issue/do a good thing/help or influence people via social media.
Our shortlist of possible causes can be found here. Cast your vote now using #CAUSE2013 to determine which we support throughout SMWLDN.
Keep an eye out & make sure to cast your vote – remember to use #CAUSE2013.
On 23rd September at 4pm, we’ll be holding an event to reveal the winning cause of our public social media vote.
At the event and remotely throughout the week, to promote our chosen #CAUSE2013 and help affect change, we will have our panel of Social Celebrity Change-Makers:
@lyndonogbourne (actor)
– 19,068 followers
@gemsmaquillage (YouTube sensation)
– 24,466 followers, 78,142 subscribers
@sonnywharton (DJ and Fatboy Slim’s Producer of the Year)
– 11,046 followers, 13,200 Facebook fans
@jodythompson (Huffington Post UK blogs editor)
– 2,044 followers
@bad_bentley (adult performer and model)
– 25,628 followers
Plus @popbitchnews and @halfon4harlowMP online! The event will be moderated by media commentator, journalist and presenter Kate Bulkley @katecomments.
