This will be the first US election year where there are more Facebook users in the USA than there are voters. Over one in ten people say it is their main source of news, and more people now trust a social media algorithm to select news for them than trust a human editor to do the same. Meanwhile, Facebook has been accused of political bias in the US media.

These platforms and the algorithms that power them are taking on a prime role in public debate. It’s time to take a hard look at how social media is shaping civil society.
