SMWLA Advisor Spotlight: Kevin Winston

Social Media Week

Social Media Week is a leading news platform and worldwide conference that curates and shares the best ideas and insights into social media and technology's impact on business, society, and culture.

Welcome to the Social Media Week Los Angeles Advisor Spotlight Series, where we sit down with members of the SMWLA Advisory Board and other prominent members of the Los Angeles social media community to get a better understanding of how they’re influencing, shaping, and working in social media.

First up is Kevin Winston, the founder of Digital LA. Here’s a little information on the man Forbes recently called one of 12 entrepreneurs who is changing LA straight from the source.

Tell us about yourself and what you do.

Hey! I’m Kevin Winston, founder of Digital LA which organizes monthly panels, cocktails and other events for professionals in start ups as well as the digital and entertainment industries. We reach more than 30,000 people weekly via our newsletter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. I’m also the founder of the Silicon Beach Fest, the first festival celebrating digital innovators from studios to startups in LA.

What’s your preferred social media presence and why?

I prefer Facebook to organize our Digital LA events. There we can status update, post casual comments in conversations conversations and post and tag photos of happy smiling attendees at our events via I prefer to use Twitter for quick event tweet reminders, retweeting digital and entertainment information, startup news, and replying to follower feedback. Twitter is also great for posting photos of our events or other premieres, conferences, and events around town via @DigitalLA.

What are you most looking forward to this year at SMWLA?

I’m looking forward to meeting awesome people and getting good conversations going about best uses of social media. I am also looking forward to the Hollywood hub centralized venues.

How do you stay current on what’s popular?

I use Twitter and Facebook to follow key news sites, celebs, organizations and influencers to stay current on what’s popular. I hardly ever go to online new sites, watch TV, or read a newspaper to find out what’s going on.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy meeting new people via various Digital LA events, and events organized by other groups in the LA area. We have a vibrant digital community in Los Angeles with groups organizing events every day so people can make important personal connections to supplement and cement initial online connections. I also like to celebrate the successes of digital innovators via our Digital LA panels, where speakers share cutting-edge use of digital and social media tools for movies, music, web series, games, and more. This is the best practice for info sharing and helps us use digital and social media better and smarter. And I love to meet the many fun, creative, and bright content creators, social media gurus, and entrepreneurs in LA. So much energy, inspiration, and fun!

What do you do to recharge?

I recharge via trips to the movies, beach, travel, and the gym where I usually can be found tweeting on the elliptical (ellipti-tweet?) including my workout via #socialworkout.

What’s your dream panel, fireside chat, or Q&A? Tell us the topic and who’s on it.

I’d love to moderate a panel featuring the Top 10 Twitter users who are not just celebs, but rather celebs who are masters at using social media to connect to, engage with, and develop authentic relationships with their fans. Currently, the Top 10 include Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Barack Obama and Kim Kardashian. Plus, I’d add Ashton Kutcher for his role in increasing the initial awareness of Twitter.

Be sure to follow Kevin Winston on Twitter and if you’d like to get involved with him and/or our other Social Media Week Los Angeles Advisory Board Members in planning an event for SMWLA, let us know.
