SMWLA Advisor Spotlight: Amber J. Lawson
Social Media Week is a leading news platform and worldwide conference that curates and shares the best ideas and insights into social media and technology's impact on business, society, and culture.
Welcome to the 4th in our Social Media Week Los Angeles Advisor Spotlight Series, where we sit down with members of the SMWLA Advisory Board and other prominent members of the Los Angeles social media community to get a better understanding of how they’re influencing, shaping, and working in social media.
Today we’re talking with Amber J. Lawson, a multi-platform storytelling strategist, online video content programming specialist, solutionist, board advisor & catalytic philanthropist. Amber J is also a second year Social Media Week Advisory Board member. For more information, you can check out her full bio here.
Who are you? What’s your business?
Hey everybody, I’m Amber J. Lawson. I am partner in The Opportunity Management Company where clients come to maximize the relationship between company or content brand and audience.
Prior to joining TOMC I led AOL as VP/ Head of Video Programming & Originals (Heidi Klum, Adam Carolla, Kevin Smith, Kevin Pollak, Jonas Bros). I also founded Transforming the World Through Comedy the first multi-platform global live streamed stand-up comedy event benefiting a catalytic philanthropy. Aside from SMWLA I am also a member of PGA, WOW & LOCA, chairman of the IAWTV Awards at CES, and on the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Emmys) Interactive Media Peer Group Executive Council.
Last, but not least, I am foursquare mayor of (and tends to rock down to) Electric Avenue.
What’s your preferred social media presence and why?
I am an equal-opportunity aggregator of technology, content, multi-platform storytelling and comedy information. I hope to be a trusted source of whats happening with the future of content regardless of what social media platform you can find me on.
What are you most looking forward to this year at SMWLA?
This year we are kicking it up a notch by focusing the content and the physical area for all the events. I’m most excited about the fact we’re creating community on the streets of Hollywood, the epicenter of all things entertainment. Having Hollywood as a focal point this year is attracting all the biggest player in entertainment, music, technology and social media.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
As a natural born disrupter, I am thrilled we live in a time when opportunity is everywhere. Social media has focused a light on problems around the world, made the issues human, and mobilized people around to world to effect change. I love being a part of, and facilitating that process.
What advice would you have given to yourself 5 years ago?
Being your word ALWAYS pays off. Everything unfolds as it is supposed to.
What’s your next billion dollar idea (that your’e willing to share)?
I think these inter webs are really gonna pay off!
