Founder & CEO, COMMUNITYx

Chloë Cheyenne is a social impact tech entrepreneur who is passionate about uniting change-makers around shared causes and movements.
Chloë graduated from The Howard University School of Business Honors Program in 2013 with a BBA in International Business and Marketing. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a full-time offer to join Google HQ in The Bay Area. Chloë identifies herself as a multiracial young woman with roots in Chicago, IL. Her dad is bi-racial— African American and Caucasian,— while her mom is an immigrant from the Philippines. She is the oldest of five siblings.

Chloe founded her company, COMMUNITYx (Cx), in light of her dad’s tragic experience with police discrimination and misconduct that left him permanently handicapped. The year before she was born, in 1989, a group of plain-clothed Chicago Police Officers conducted an unannounced raid on her grandmother’s townhome on the South Side of Chicago. They opened fire on her dad over a dozen times, hitting him multiple times in his groin area and on the crown of his head. As he was bleeding to death in the hallway of his mom’s home, the men realized they had the wrong address and planted drugs in the top drawer of his bedroom dresser, physically assaulted him, and waited to call an ambulance in hopes that he would die. To this day, her dad lives with a bullet lodged in his spine and struggles with PTSD and depression.

In 2016, amidst the storms of police misconduct cases that were finally being brought to light, Chloë decided to leave the comfort of Google in search of something more. The killings of Tamir Rice, Mike Brown, Eric Garner and more moved her and her family on a very intimate level. She found herself asking the critical question, “Who else cares about these issues and how can I unite with them?” Unable to find a platform that allowed her to easily connect with others who shared her passions, Chloë decided to create one.

Cx is a tech startup that represents the social impact interests and movements of young activists across the globe. The company stands behind every cause that is community-positive, from women’s rights to racial justice to the climate crisis. As Founder & CEO, Chloë leads the company through her vision of “Uniting Humanity & Mobilizing the World.” Since launching in September 2019, Chloë and COMMUNITYx have earned major accolades such as being recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30 as the #1 Startup of The Year 2019 and being named one of Startup Grind’s Top 100 Global Startups. Additionally, the company has received phenomenal press coverage from outlets such as MSNBC, Black Enterprise, The Root, ZORA, and Grio.

#IRL: Communities to Create Meaningful Connection

Hosted by Havas Media

From MySpace Top 8 to AOL Instant Messenger, social media, in its nascent stages, served as a forum for closed connections. As channels proliferated over the past decade, the rise of Facebook, Instagram, and more gave way to a new kind of connection – a public one. Friend and follower counts became paramount, leaving that initial digital intimacy in the dust.

Gen Z has precipitated a shift away from quantity and back toward quality. The power of public shares has diminished in favor of private exchanges and closed communities focused on tight connections, trust, and privacy. A measurable rise has occurred in platforms that allow users to clearly identify a select list of users who can see their shared content, including photos and messages.

In this session, Jess Richards, Global Head of Social at Havas Media, will explore the future of a meaningful social engagement as told by younger generations and key ways to create authentic relationships that are sustainable.

Attend this session and learn:

  • How Snapchat’s direct messaging capability and private nature of the content created an example that other social platforms quickly
