Humans have gone to the moon and back, and yet, we have not fully explore the depths of the oceans on our very own planet. Grandson of explorer Jacques Cousteau, Fabien Cousteau is seeking to expand our knowledge of ocean life. He will be spending 31 days under water on a research expedition off the coast of Florida, studying the effects of climate change on the reef as well as the psychological effects of long-term under-water confinement.

Fabien followed closely in his grandfather’s legacy, which has been both a blessing and a curse. In Fabien’s words, “I take it upon myself to honor it. It’s also a lot of work. When you go through that door, you have to be twice as good as anyone else.”

Fabien’s voyage will commemorate the 50th anniversary of his grandfather’s similar expedition, resulting in the documentary, “World Without Sun” that went on to win multiple awards. He will follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and go further, diving twice as deep and staying one additional day underwater.

Fabien, an NYC local, jokes that the size of New York apartments will help him adjust more quickly to the confined space of Aquarius, their underwater lab/headquarters. What makes this expedition so unique is the way that you will be able to participate, even from your tiny apartment. The mission, occurring 20 meters under water will be live-streamed, making it possible for anyone to join the adventure, all thanks to some support from our friends at Nokia.

Hear from Fabien before he sets off on his adventure by registering for Social Media Week, February 17-21. We have a feeling this is going to be big!
